Default Choosing the LOTR army thats best for me.

Hey to all you LOTR players I am considering building a army since I have to wait for all my modeling stuff to get to me from over seas.

Well to make a long story short can I get some basic info on the play still of the armies in LOTR so I can make a informed decission on the armies.

When it comes to the movies/books I like rohan the most but I want something that goes with me.
Thanks for all your help.

So I am growing my enemy.....so what I gotta kill something.

Do you have any information you can give us to help us in aiding you? I can write up a brief description of each armies play style if you really want but if you could describe what kind of play style you prefer in other war games it might help for us to know.

Regards,
Jake.

Will you be playing WotR or SBG? I'll assume SBG for now, and give you some positives and negatives (+ or -) of the different army lists (only those with plastic kits), as well as a few army lists/warband ideas (there are other army builds beside those listed, if you want more detail about any of the armies, just ask).

Minas Tirith:
+ Heavily armoured infantry/cavalry
+ Plenty of elites
+ Contains cheap heroes
- Lacks hard hitting units, apart from Knights, against higher defence models (6+)
- Is "weak" against Strength 4

Warband 1 - 189 Points:
Faramir, Captain of Gondor - Heavy Armour
6 Citadel Guard - Spears
Warrior of Minas Tirith - Shield, and War Horn
Warrior of Minas Tirith - Banner
Warband 2 - 155 Points:
Knight of the White Tower
12 Warriors of Minas Tirith - 4 with Shields, 4 with Bows, and 4 with Spears and shield
Warband 3 - 155 Points
Captain of Minas Tirith - Shield
12 Warriors of Minas Tirith - 4 with Shields, 4 with Bows, and 4 with Spears and shield
Total - 499 Points

Rohan:
+ Plenty of mid-level heroes to choose from
+ Warriors can be upgraded with certain heroes, to become better at fighting or wounding
+ Lots of mounted elites
- No really powerful heroes
- Cavalry lack lances

Warband 1 - 239 Points:
Erkenbrand - Horse
12 Riders of Rohan - 4 Throwing Spears
Warband 2 - 143 Points:
Eowyn - Armour
12 Warriors of Rohan - 12 Throwing Spears, and 12 Shields
Warband 3 - 139 Points:
Captain of Rohan - Shield, and Heavy Armour
12 Warriors of Rohan - 12 Shields
Total - 521 Points

Dwarves:
+ Very forgiving army
+ Toughest heroes in the game
+ Good at killing high defence enemies
- Lacks spears
- Slow moving

Elves:
+ Lots of powerful heroes to choose from
+ Best archery in the game
+ Powerful elites
- Lacks cheap infantry/cavalry
- Normally outnumbered 3:2 or 2:1

Harad and Umbar:
+ Some of the best cavalry in the game
+ Best archery for the evil side
+ Large variety of warriors
- Low defence
- Limited access to shields

Isengard:
+ Variety of strong troops and weaker, more numerous, troops
+ Good mid-level heroes
+ Access to magic
- Lacks archery
- Expensive warriors

The Eastern Kingdoms:
+ High defence infantry/cavalry
+ Access to cheap cavalry
+ Access to powerful heroes
- Can be expensive to buy (Khand/pikes)
- Lacks mid-level heroes

Mordor:
+ Powerful heroes and monsters
+ Large variety of troops
+ Good access to elites
- Cheaper heroes have low courage
- Lacks mid-level heroes

Warband 1 - 117 Points:
Orc Captain - Shield
12 Mordor Orcs - 4 Shields, 4 Spears, 2 Orc Bows, and 2 Two-handed Weapons
Warband 2 - 122 Points:
Orc Shaman
12 Mordor Orcs - 4 Shields, 4 Spears, 2 Orc Bows, and 2 Two-handed Weapons
Warband 3 - 222 Points:
Ringwraith - 2 Might, 14 Will, 2 Fate, and Horse
12 Morannon Orcs - 12 Shields, and 6 Spears
Total - 461

Moria:
+ Lots of monsters/heavy hitters to choose from
+ Can be a horde army and contain monsters
+ Nearly always outnumbers enemy forces
- Powerful heroes too expensive at lower points
- Normal warriors very weak

Angmar:
+ Lots of spirits
+ Access to good monsters
+ Lots of magic in the army
- Lack of normal troops to choose from
- Lack of might

Warband 1 - 117 Points:
Orc Captain - Shield
12 Mordor Orcs - 4 Shields, 4 Spears, 2 Orc Bows, and 2 Two-handed Weapons
Warband 2 - 122 Points:
Orc Shaman
12 Mordor Orcs - 4 Shields, 4 Spears, 2 Orc Bows, and 2 Two-handed Weapons
Warband 3 - 182 Points:
Burdhur
12 Mordor Orcs - 4 Shields, 4 Spears, 2 Orc Bows, and 2 Two-handed Weapons
Warband 4 - 190 Points:
Barrow Wight
6 Spectres
Cave Troll
Total - 611

Hope this helps

@Chris Guard of Mardat
Wow thanks for the run down on the armies that really helps!

@Red corsairs
in 40k I play space marines(i know dont get mad) in fantasy I play VC, Beastmen, and skaven. For a play style I like to be able to atleast perform ok in the shooting and melee other then that the reason I play my fanatsy armies that I have is I get a evil little happiness in putting down a mosnter on the field and watching it eat their units.

If after this little explaination of my game play highlights a army more then another please feel free to turn me to the right direction.

EDIT:What is the difference between WOTR and SBG? I am totally new to LOTR tabletop.

So I am growing my enemy.....so what I gotta kill something.

The best armies for performing strongly in both shooting and melee are Isengard (Crossbowmen and the Fighting Uruk-hai, Berserkers etc.) and the Elves (High Elves or Wood Elves, but the High Elves usually hold up better defensively due to their heavy armour). However many other armies can use shooting well if played properly. Rohirrim for example can shoot on horseback as well as carrying shields. The Dunedain/Rangers of the North are also powerful archers (as well as potent combatants).

In short... WOTR is a game for playing very large battles, SBG is a skirmish game. My personal opinion is that the SBG is far superior to the garbage that is WOTR, but try them both out yourself before making your own decision about it.

Jake.

Well after the list and all opinions that have been givin so far I think I am going to get either kingdoms of men(Rohan), or Moria since I like the fact that they have monsters

So I am growing my enemy.....so what I gotta kill something.

I was interested in this thread.
If I were to start a LotR army, my play style suits EITHER heavy defence or heavy attack. I don't care about a well balanced army but would prefer to stay away from evil armies.
This would lead me either to the Dwarves or the Elves I suppose?
