Oxford Dictionary Player: a person taking part in a sport or game
What ever level you choose to take part in 40k makes you a player.
Anyone can play it at what ever level they choose.

My son gets great enjoyment with his mates, who don't have the rulebook, by just getting the models out and making up ridiculous and awesome little stories and acting them out with the mini's. THAT is playing the game in it's purest form IMO.

100% rules accurate with power builds is a great contest of your abilities to understand the system.
Loose rules conformance and a big cinematic narrative often yields a barrel of laughs and great fun for all.
"Fluff" correct is a perfect way to "re-enact" some of the pivotal events of the 40k world, indeed there is a big movement within the WW2 gaming community that insists on 100% historical accuracy in the situations and TO&E of their games.

My personal preference is for "fluff correct" as it makes things more "realistic", however I like to think I'm not so far up my own arse to think that anyone who plays it differently is somehow a lesser "player".

Being a geek is not an exclusive club. All are welcome. Fuck people who try to make 40k a click. "Oh your not a player because you don't take it seriously you act in fluff not to win and you haven't even played for 2 months"

Go fuck yourself. Off a cliff. Into rocks. Just high enough to cripple but not kill you. Until the piranhas come.

Ps: I didn't direct that at anyone here, it was at an imaginary antagonist.

Wow, your imaginary antagonist really gets to you Grimmy. I'll buy you a coffee if that'll help ease you. :-)

Ironically, I had a discussion about this yesterday with a coworker who likes the fluff and concept of fun gaming. He said the following, "So there is competitive tournaments for this, huh? And just like any game that involves strategic reasoning there's always the Dicks who take it too far out of its original context to let others enjoy it for its actual intentions, to play and have fun at the same time. I actually dislike that type. They're always the ones who wonder why they're lonely on weekends and spend the rest of their disposable income on porn and lotion."

Well if we are trying to get technical here then someone who actively plays WH40k games would be considered a gamer. However given the context of what you originally addressed the question then it would seem those people consider a "player" as superior to someone who just loves the 40kverse. This can go a whole lot of ways because someone who is good at strategy games can be good at this game (without regards to knowledge base about rules) without actually really knowing much about the fluff. Someone who has read years worth of content but does not play very often would in turn not be considered a "gamer" even though their knowledge base is vastly superior. It comes down to categorizing warfare.

Person 1: OH I LOVE *generic band name here*
Person 2: Really? Name all of their band members, their first tour, 5 of their songs, What their favorite dessert is.....etc...

Enjoy the hobby despite what side you are on.
