Default Firing from ranks

This may sound silly but bear with me- I'm a 40k vet thinking about taking up WFB... I'm looking at ogres just for a bit of fun (yeah I know they're rubbish).

Looking through the forum I see people say that Gnoblar fighters are awesome due to their 2*multiple shots 'sharp stuff'... they gave the impression that a unit could fire all 20+ models in the unit.

If a unit of 24 models (6*4deep) were to fire throwing weapons how many could fire?
- looking in the rulebook I can see that hills give +1rank firing when firing with the example of bows getting 2 ranks not 1... but I can see nowhere where it says how many ranks can fire normally for different weapon types.
can someone point me to the right page or state the ruleset that governs this?

I believe that rule applies to any weapons fired from a unit that is a rank and file unit. Skirmishing units are different in that every model can fire, since they aren't 'rank and file' troopers.

Grik is right when ranked up only the front rank can fire
When on a hill the second rank can fire also
With my Gnoblars I deploy in 2 ranks of 12 meaning I get 24 shots 2x 12
The Gnoblars are so cheap and disposable with careful movement you can get of 2 rounds of shooting (yours and a stand and shoot) before anything even hits your line( at which stage the Gnobs will die)
The way I use my gnobs is to push them well forward of my battle line covering most of the battlefield(I have 3 units of 24) this generally manages to clear out any small units trying to flank me and has been known to take out elite cavalry units, and expensive skirmish units.
Once all the skirmish type units are dead I let the gnobs get charged, do a few wounds on the big block units hopefully at least 1 wd to lose a rank before my Ogres hit on the counter. Just remember to leave a large gap between Gnobs and Ogres to account for overrun.

You want pages 9 and 26 of the rulebook for Line of Sight and Shooting related rules, these should clear a lot of it up for you. Bear in mind it is unusual to field a missile unit in more than 2 ranks. Normally you want to maximise your shooting, whilst not taking up the entire board, so you go for 2 ranks as ranks 3 and 4 aren't doing anything in the shooting phase. In CC most ranged units are useless so the extra ranks are often redundant there too.

In a general sense, often it is worth fielding ranged units as MSU, so with minimum models possible and few (often just musician) upgrades. This is because you don't want to give too many points away when they get chewed up in CC and often two small ranged units are more useful than 1 mahoosive one.
