While an assault cannon can penetrate AV 14, it's very very rare. You'd have to hit, then you'd have to role a 6 for AP, then you'd have to role a 3 on the rending role.

On the other side, the twin linked assault cannon has the best chance of penetrating AV10 - 12 of any of the vehicle weapons available to space marines, especially at 12-24" range.

Jaysen although its hard to pen av14 its better than lascannons and any strenght 8 weapons can only glance (other than meltas at less than half range)

I think Katie addressed this pretty well recently. I'll try and do the same.

An assault cannon is about 1/3 more effective than a lascannon against AV14 (in terms of penetrating hits; it's probably better than that at glancing).

So, all well and good. Do you get to fire that assault cannon as many times as the lascannon? The lascannon has double the asscan's range, and furthermore firing from that range means less things are firing back, so you're less likely to get damaged.
Those are two good reasons to take the lascannon, unless (like BA) you have a lot of transports coming in quickly, you want to get closer anyway, and/or you just happen to be Fast.

This thread has convinced me that the new dread i am building will have an assault cannon and tl autocannons. Looks like a potent mix. Most interesting.

Yeah, I've got two land raider crusaders and three baal predators I use in every large game. The twin linked AC is money in the bank.

Mac jack you make a good point about the range an I except that as a weakness that's why I take a ac/las pred in my list I just think they get disrigaurded (sp?) to often. Shaantitus I like your idea with the dread may have to give it a try

I have a friend who used to play Dark Angels. Samael in his Land Speeder is a monster. A flying Land Raider with TL AC and TL HB. Chews infantry like nobody's business.

To add my experience to this, a while ago i had a game against SW. Not gonna be mean, but she wasn't very good. Anyhow, my vanilla SM dreads (AC/ML and TL HB/PF) managed to shoot their way through a unit of bikes, some blood claws, some terminator WG and Logan. While my Terminator squad Deep Striked in to rip some Grey Hunters apart with their Assault Cannon.

I freaking love Assault cannons.

What B&K said. Assault cannons were the biggest, ugliest, Swiss army knife weapon in 2nd ed. The only real down side was that they might jam and kill the terminator using it or maybe damage the vehicle bearing it. thankfully they aren't quite as powerful now.
