No, it just gets hot. The rule is 'Gets hot', not 'Blows Your Arm Off'.

The reason you might loose a model is simply because the game is too abstract to account for anything more complicated than this guy is alive/this guy is dead.

I was playing Rogue Trader (The modern RPG, not the 80's wargame) and my character had been trying to aquire a plasma pistol right from the start of the story. He finally got one, a gorgious, mars-forged work of art from before the Heresy.

Damn thing overheated the first time I pulled the trigger. Embarising as all hell, but it didn't explode. Think second degree burns to the hand. Very very low chance of dieing from it.

However, once you have second degree burns to your shooting-hand and your gun is on the ground scorching the floorboards there's an upper limit to how effective you can be in battle - so the wargame treats that model as a casualty.

Shame, a character in the book frying would have been worth a read! :-)

Handy as hell in game terms, but bloody annoying (for r kid) when they overheat, at least the orks don't have them anymore!

Is there any other guns with daft 'you may die' rules attached to them (other than the comical Shokk Attack Gun)?

In the WD detailing the accounts of Commissar Blanke or whatever he was called, the Commissar in question lost a hand when his plasma pistol blew up.

plasma guns and alike should have a health and safety warning, these things are dangerous!

one thing we must remember about 40k is that when we defeat and remove models from the board they arn't necasarily dead in some case we can believe that the casuality is either unconcius or just wounded to where they cannot contiue the fight.

This would explain why in many of the books that if a plasma weapon over heats why the user isnt always killed from it

Safety warnings in the Imperium would be... Less than helpful.

Caution! Failure to appease the Machine Spirit may cause it to grow wrathful!

Extreme Danger: Recite the Litany of the Somnolent Inferno before firing.

Reminder: The Adeptus Mechanicus reminds you that this weapon is both sacred and more valuable than your entire platoon.

Important! Death in service to the Emperor is its own reward.

Yep, that's really useful

Im pritty sure that there is a story in the csm codex that has Kharn gets his hand singed from a plasma pistol, but he just drops it. kills everyone around, picks it up again and goes off on his merry way

The ork Zzap gun has a chance to kill some of its grot crew and the weird boy has a chance to kill himself as well as the boys around him. Good old orks.
Chaos Dreds have a chance to go on a rampage and blow up our own units.
Daemon weapons have a chance to stop the Chaos Lord from attacking and to deal a wound

Thats all i can think of at the mmoment
(sorry i took your "gun" definition a bit loosely)

If I remember right, in Brotherhood of the snake, one of the marines has a plasma gun. During a battle with orks he fires it so much it overloads, so he chucks it away into the oncoming orks and it explodes. (and after that he gets issued a flamer, presumably because he cant be trusted with priceless chapter relics)
Apart from that one example I cant recal any other fluff to suport plasma weapons blowing up in the users face.
