Default Eldar or Tyranids?

After building a sizeable Chaos force, I'm thinking about starting another army. Originally, it was between traitor guard, eldar and nids, but I have a feeling I'd get bored with the former so, only Eldar and Tyranids remain.

I like Eldar because how good they are when you use them right, along with their specialised troops (especially fire dragons, melta squads rock!). Being able to move up to 30" with some units is quite cool too. I think I'd enjoy the challenge of a finesse army. The downside for me is the helmets mainly, and their colourful. I'm sure I'd get used to it though.

Now I'm not the sort of person to start a new army just because of a new codex (ok there was daemons, please don't judge me ), but the timing of the new nids is pretty much perfect. I've toyed with the idea of a horde army before, and the monsterous creatures are amazing. They seem to be one of the more powerful armies out at the moment (though to be fair I haven't had a good look at the 'dex). The downside to the 'nids is their lack of character. They eat, move and eat some more.

I'd be using this as a competitive army, but of course modelling and painting comes into play.

So, what do you guys think? Feel free to give the reasons for your choice.

I can read your mind. Right now you think I'm lying.

Tyranids, they're cool, new codex out, by the sounds of it very flexible in their new codex, and Eldar (like DE, Tau, and a few others) are a very touchy gaming race: experience dictates (that's what I've heard)

Most importantly it should be about what you think looks the best or games the best in your opinion, I'm sure you'll make a decision you can be happy to stick to : )

Depends, do you feel like painting ~40 infantry in 2000pts + tanks?

Or would you prefer painting ~400 infantry + Monstrous Creatures?

The only thing you need in order to paint Eldar well is the ability to do Gemstones. The only ability you need to play Eldar well is to have a vague grasp of probability.

The only thing you need in order to paint Nids well is know what a "Wash" is. The only ability you need to play Nidz is the ability to stay awake for 45 minutes at a stretch.

Does that help?

90% of people think they are above average.

Statistically Improbable. Psychologically Inevitable.

Hardly the only, you need to be able to move like nobody else.

Then again, 40k is a game of maneuver, if you can do that, you can play any army.

It depends on the kind of player you are. If you like using tactics and strategy, as well as a varied and elite army then go for Eldar. If you're more of an all-or-nothing player who doesn't care about tactics, and just likes the idea of sending in everything you have, then go for Tyranids.

I'm also going to start a second army, and while I was going to for Eldar, the more I think about it the less certain I am that they're the army for me. Its not that I don't like them, they are after all one hell of an army, both visually and in terms of how they play.

My advice is to look at both armies, make a list for each, and then play them using other models as proxies. See which one suits you best and then start collecting.

I would have said to play Eldar, but since I am a tad bit biased I decided to vote to flip a coin.

Eldar are fun and are pretty quick. We have many, many great options and we don't all look alike. Farseers are amazing and while being extremely beneficial to our army can completely nix the opponent's if he is too reliable on psykers.

Nids look like they could be pretty pesky. They are also fairly quick, and they typically are tougher than Eldar (gaunts aside). You don't, however, have any real transports so you can expect to be shot (and potentially instakilled) any turn. Only around half of the psyker powers seem to require a test.

Both are awesome, but I'm still an Eldar!

based on the fact you have an Ork army, i'd go with Eldar. a lot less models to paint, and more varied units, so unlike Orks, the bulk of your army won't be green.

I think that if you find that a race has no character then you won't enjoy it as much; it's not so mch your valiant troops succesfully killing the Pudding Prophet of Mars as you just pushing some cool little aliens around a table for an hour.

I don't have an ork army. What gave you that idea?

Wait for the blood angel book then make a pre-heresy BA army....Sanginius as your commander!!!!!!, Also i play nids and eldar......Both totally different play styles so i would test both army's before buying as they each cost alot to build up nicely.
