Default Why thousand sons?

I was thinking of chapter names the other day and while most of the chapters have names that reflect their primarchs upbringing and/ or battle tactics the Thousand sons name makes no sense at all.
The marine chapters didn't adopt the thousand strong policy until after the horus heresy to dilute the power of the marines and all the first founding chapters had several thousand soldiers so how did the Thousand sons get their name?

I am not aware of an official explanation.

Maybe there were only one thousand pre-heresy instead of many thousands, due to the nature of their gene seed. If I remember Realms of Chaos normal TS originally increased access to magic/psychic powers.

I cannot remember the statistics for psykers per head of population; however, if you take the proportion of latent psykers and slant it for the survival rates for enhanced physiology of a marine, then a survival rate of third to quarter that of another legion is not implausible.

My other thought is that there were 1000 survivors of the first conversion.

The initial creation of space marines from Magnus's geneseed was 1000, and although many 1000's more were created, they kept the name '1000 sons' as this was the original number created and as they were created from Magnus's seed, they were his sons, aka thousand sons of magnus.

In addition to this, Magnus's name of course starts with M, M is Roman numerals for 1000.

Default Why a thousand sons

In the novel " A Thousand Sons " Ahriman tells the story about uncontrollable mutation plaguing the legion until they were reunited with Magnus and there were scarcely a thousand left before Magnus stabilized the gene seed. And again at the end of the novel when the Space Wolves destroy Prospero there are again only about a thousand left. It also mentions they had the name before any of that happened and and strongly implies the emperor named the legion knowing what was going to happen.

As 15159 says, there's a conversation between Ahriman and his mortal 'apprentice', the empath who's name I forget. Lem...something. The chapter had always been called the Thousand Sons, in fact I believe it was suggested that it was one of the only chapters never to be renamed when the Primarch took over.

When the mutations took over, and Magnus made his deals to save the rest, there were only 1000 left. At this point in the book, Lem* says 'so why were they called the Thousand Sons before that, if you didn't know how many would survive'?

Ahriman has no answer.

Pretty much what the man said - the 'flesh change' struck the legion, leaving 1000 'Sons' left that survived.

I'm going to go with "it sounded cool, and when they later changed things to have much larger numbers they neglected to give a reason why they have the name".

I'm sure there is some explanation that'll get pasted on their eventually. Perhaps that they're a smaller than normal legion, or that there were 1,000 psykers in the Legion, making them the "sons of Mangus". Or something.
