Best platoon setup. What is it? Comments please

Hi all,

I have been going through the new IG dex and was wordering what would be the best basic platoon for the guard.

I wanted to discuss all aspects of this including weapon selection, platoon size, squad composition/use and of cause pts cost etc.

Please add comments as it will help us all.

This is what I came up with.

Standard Infantry platoon

Command squad, 1 Platoon commander with laspistol, ccw, 4 guardsmen with Vox-caster, lasguns and mortar. = 40pts
(This unit will issue commands to platoon units within 6 while trying to pin any priority/threat infantry units)

1st squad, 10 Guardsmen, sergeant with laspistol and ccw, Lasguns and Lascannon. =70pts
(This unit will sit in front of my 20 man unit to take out approaching armour and absorb any potential charges)

2nd squad, 10 Guardsmen, sergeant with laspistol and ccw, Lasguns, Vox-caster and autocannon. =65pts
(This unit will combine with the 3rd squad in the platoon and engage any/all infantry threats)

3rd squad, 10 Guardsmen, sergeant with laspistol and ccw, Lasguns and autocannon. =60pts
(This unit will combine with the 2nd squad in the platoon and engage any/all infantry threats)

Platoon total pts =235pts.

Breakdown

35 men
1 Mortar
1 Lascannon
2 Autocannon
27 lasguns
4 laspistol
2 Vox-casters

What do you all think?

Yeah, put the expensive, long-range Lascannon into a Guardsmen's hands (BS3) and then sit it in front of the proper meat-shield. There's sound logic >_<

well heres my platoon:

Red Platoon 393pts:

Platoon Command 82pts
Platoon Commander- Power Weapon, Bolt pistol
4X Guardsmen- Vox Caster, Platoon Standard, Lascannon
Heavy Weapons 1 60pts
3X Mortars
Heavy Weapons 2 60pts
3X Mortars
(combine Heavy weapons 1+2)
Red 1 67pts
9X Guardsmen- Autocannon, Vox Caster
1X Sergeant- Bolt Pistol
Red 2 62pts
9X Guardsmen- Vox Caster, Grenade Launcher
1X Sergeant- Bolt pistol
Red 3 62pts
9X Guardsmen- Vox Caster, Grenade Launcher
1X Sergeant- Bolt pistol
plan is to combine the mortar teams and place on home objective, and use them to pin/maul enemy infantry. Red 1 to target Low AV/ Medium T units and the platoon command to target High Av/ High T units, Red 2+3 to move forward to claim/contest objectives.

remeber this is just my Platoon, not my army so i gots lots more goodies to boot

*edit*
oops! left in the pts value of each option

Nice platoon lawrence96, theres just one small problem - only the infantry squads can combine, not the heavy weapon squads.

I can't really give an example as my two platoons will be different, one as fire support with squads with auto cannons and heavy weapon teams with autocannons and the HQ in a Chimera,

The second platoon will be my objective takers and will be a min platoon (HQ and 2 Infantry Squads) in Chimeras.

The two Inf Sqds in Chimeras take the objective and the two platoon HQs stay back with the fire support and use the order system to clear a path for the 'Assault' platoon.

doh! thats what you get for not reading slowly and carefully, ah well strategy still stands, slightly more useful now as they can't target all in one go.

I haven't played any IG yet, just got the codex, but I'm thinking that putting Heavy Weapons in the infantry squads is going to waste some orders. You can only order one of those squads.

If you lose the heavy weapons in each squad and contribute more Lasguns to rules like first rank, second rank, then you can have a Heavy Weapons Platoon that can do a better job with orders like Bring it Down, or Fire on My Target.

It will be more expensive, and more effective I think, because you are designing units to take advantage of the orders they will be receiving.

I do think combining most of the infantry behind a smaller meat shield is a great idea

Hi all,

The reason why I have a lascannon is so I can threaten armour straight away allowing no saves for cover and it makes enemy shoot at them rather than my large units. It is a tactic i have used and it worked well.

Sorry, but you can't combine heavy or special weapons squads. Only infantry squads can be combined.

I don't think there is only one solution for the best platoon setup. It depends mostly on what you want it to do and which effects on the field you want it to produce.

What is the most feared army by you ?
An easy question .... pokemons of course !
