Default Rules for Night lords in 40k

Hi everyone, I am thinking of building a Nightlords 30/40k army.

But I have heard a lot of debate about which rules o use, some say the Chaos, some people say raven guard marines, others the Crimson Slaughter rule set.

From what I know the Night Lords do not use Daemons much, and are not totally reliant on raptors, what other things define their tactics?

Background-wise, the Night Lords specialize in terror tactics, lightning raids, and stealth- committing only when the enemy is at their most vulnerable. They mostly just disdain most of the other Traitor Legions, especially among the less Chaos-corrupted Night Lords. They almost never deal in summoning daemons, though there are several Possessed/Daemon Prince Night Lords. Daemon Engines might be another grey area, as those are essentially weapons (plus this gives you an excuse to take a Heldrake). Raptors are kind of their signature unit.

Re: using Crimson Slaughter rules: all your units causing Fear is certainly fluffy, as are the more defensive/'stealthy' Possessed, though you lose out VotLW, so it depends on which you prize more in terms of background. I'm not super hip on 30k, but Raven Guard seem like a good substitute.

Makes me pine for the 3.5 'dex and its legion-specific rules, when they all had Infiltrate and Night Vision.

Yeah, I'd say the Talon Strike Force with a 1st Company Strike Force full of Vanguard, to represent the Night Raptors (Night Lords elite shock troops; I'm a little hazy on the details but I believe they formed the Night Lords' First Company after the Atramentar after Sevatar's death, so they'd be pretty elite guys). Fear-causing, Fearless jump troops with Shrouded fighting at night projecting a bubble of leadership penalty seems about as Night Lord-y as you can get in 40k. The only fly in the ointment is Scouts, who you'd have to leg in as Recon Marines left over from 30k (many of the Night Lords have been fighting the Long War for only a century or so due to how time flow works, or doesn't, in the Eye and so it's not unfeasible to believe that some squads would maintain their old specialisms).

As a Raven Guard player myself, I think you'll find alot of the rules will fit nicely with everything you've just mentioned, very much looking forward to the supplement myself.

Would love to see some night lord pictures once you've got rolling.

I used the blood Angel book for my Night Lords.

Jump troops, fast tanks, good characters.

I suggest taking a look at the formations in 'Kauyon', especially ...
- Shadowstrike Kill Team
- Shadow Force
- Skyhammer Orbital Assault

40k Armies: Dark Eldar / Adepta Sororitas
WHFB Armies: Vampire Counts / Empire / various Elves
Horus Heresy: Alpha Legion / Warp Cult
