Default Hobby Budget Challenge

So my buddy who runs the blog FTGT (Facing the Grey Tide) is putting up a challenge, it can be seen here: http://ftgtgaming.blogspot.com/2014/...challenge.html

Basically you can spend $75 a month for 6 months, and you get a double up month where you can spend $150. I have a SM and Knight Army and want to try something new. What would give me the most bang for my buck? I'm pretty open to suggestions, I have a little less than a month to decide what army to build.

Do you have to purchase from GW or can you buy from Ebay and bits sellers?

You can buy it anywhere but you have to use GW prices for the allotment towards the $75.

Daemons units tend to be a trifle cheaper than most 40k units, since they have to share their line with the cheaper Fantasy line. Of course, they're also a horde army (unless you go with a purely FMCspam route, or something).

Do you carry over unspent change between months? (strikes me like you would, probably, but...)

If you want purely a "most points per mini bought" army you might want to go an elite army like Grey Knights, Plague Marine CSM, Dark Angels or the aforementioned Daemons FMCspam...

Of course, really, when starting a new army, I can't help but think that the most important thing is to be passionate about the army (background, minis, what have you)--what interests you to be able to play is more important than squeezing the most bang out of your buck. Tell us what armies you're interested about in the first place, perhaps: we could give advising on what units you ought to buy within that army to get the most effective of a little force...

Well Mossy that's the problem, there is something great about every army that interests me. I love the fluff behind Dark Eldar, the ease of painting Necrons, the idea of painting my own color scheme nids, and I've had my fill of IG and SM.

Money does carry over into the next month and the Codex does not count towards the total. I am really thinking DE but don't really know where to start other than venoms and wyches.

With all the new nid models coming out I've decided to start one. My first $75 will be spent on December 1st. What is the first thing I need to build a competitive army on a budget? Keep in mind you have a month to paint them as well, and since I have the month of December off I might use it as my double up month and spend $150.

Competitive Nids will be hard to figure out for a bit - the re-introduction of Mycetic Spores is almost certain to have a big impact. At the moment, it's a matter of bringing Skyblight Swarms as far as a competitive list goes.

Until we see the impact of Spores, I'd go for a Winged Hive Tyrant - they've been good for at least two editions, so probably a safe bet in the long-run, and they're one of the best units in the current Nids codex. Whatever happens to the rest of the army, Winged Hive Tyrants will almost certainly remain the top HQ.

Give me data for unit cost in points and in dollars and I'll try and find an optimal solution for you (operational researcher in training, would be good practice for me!).

I'd need data for every single unit in the game though, unless you want a specific army and then I just need data for every single unit in that army.

Went with nids, used my double up month plus a little from January's budget to buy the Wrath of the Hive Mind box set, figured it was a good start....I know I'm going to have to add more gaunts quicklyso the tervigon is a troops choice, but after that what do I need to be adding?
