I like using them in my BA army more than I like them in SM armies, though having some Ironclad dreadnoughts with IH tactics podding in might be nice. It Will Not Die makes them a bit more durable up close like that, but Explodes! is still Explodes!.

Unfortunately Canada got rid of the penny and now my two cents rounds down to zero, so...take it for what you will.

I've found them pretty handy for sallies due to the penchant for flamer + melta weapons. Sternguard in a pod are one of my favourite units to field.

Yep another vote for Salamanders.

Command Squads with melta or Sternies with combi-melta in pods are vicious.

And yeah I used to play Blood Angels too with a couple of pods, combined with Assault Marines deep striking. You can lay down the pain...
Hell, maybe even combine the two for a 'tribute to Armageddon' army where the two Chapters became good friends.

Depends on what you want. Firehawks, for example, can drop 4 flamers at +1s, but salamanders have more reliable melta. BA can drop fragiosos and have cheaper sternguard (by not that much), but space wolves have jaws of the wolf. There are a lot of cool ways you could play it, though my personal favorites are sternguard in a pod and BA's fragiosos.

I'd say Vulkan with 2 minimum size Tac. squads with meltas and fill up the rest of the points with sternguard in a pod with meltas.

At 500 points i think vulkan is far too expensive.

I'd be tempted to go with:

HQ- stock librarian with pyromancy primaris

1 x 10 man tactical squad, MM, meltagun, combi melta

1 x 5 man tactical squad, flamer, combi flamer

1 x 5 man assault squad, 2 flamers, power weapon.

libby rides with assault marines, flamer templates everywhere
