Default Musings on an all scout army

I'm getting to the point where my Salamanders are coming to a logical conclusion - there's more stuff i could buy, but i have the majority of the units I want. Therefore, i need a new army!

I've dabbled with CSM, Tau, GK and various others, but nothing has taken off. Ideally i want some kind of ranger/recon themed army, and whilst Tau seem like a really good solution, I've tried to love them but i just can't. I'm a bonafide SM fanboy at heart.

The idea of an all SM scout army is something i'm interested in, and has been considered before. A couple of years ago I was considering such a thing and i found this:

http://www.dropship.org.uk/40K/jackals.asp

It's pretty close to the vision i had in my head, and will be my primary inspiration. I doubt i'll get started on it for a while, but i'd appreciate your thoughts and please feel free to rip apart my ideas if any of it sounds stupid

So, here we go:

- The chapter will be homebrew, as a successor chapter to the Sons of Medusa. This gives me IH chapter tactics (not bad for scouts), and a good fluff link through the 'desert support' squads which the Sons of Medusa used in the Badab war.

- For HQ's & support i'll be running techmarines, both for fluff reasons and to take advantage of bolster defences.

- For the initial 500pt army i'll probably take a LSS, 2 x sniper squads, an assaulty BP/CC squad and some scout bikes.

- I've started building a small inquisition force, so they will be able to bolster weak points and flesh out the weaker points of the army.

Thoughts?

Stormtalons sound like they'd suit your list; fast, able to outflank, and give you the firepower that a scout army might lack otherwise.

Another option would be to ally in Guard for things like Scout Sentinels...but I'd wait until April when they make the new one.

You could do a xenos scout army; Kroot, Pathfinders, Darkstrider, Tetras, Illic Nightspear, Pathfinders/Rangers....

I have a SM Scout army, I have them mixed with IG & Sentinels (use the IG as allies) painted up as scouts with a mixture of scout and IG bits n bobs, but in my mind the IG's are scouts

All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?

I really like pathfinders, but i've bought a load of Tau before and lost interest before i even got started. It's a while before i start this project so i'll give it a good bit of consideration.

It is FW so not 40k legit in all cases, but i wonder if you could ally in Taurus vehicles from the Elysian IG range - maybe even use them as proxy landspeeders?

I like those Elysians! Never looked at them before. Not relevant to the OP, but still, cool. Only dumb thing is the bipod on the meltagun in the Elysian command squad. When would that see any use?

"Sarge, we're about 6 feet away from the Land Raider, we're in melta range. Permission to open fire, sir!"

"Damnit private, it only works if you use the bipod! How many times I gotta tell you? Don't worry, that tank isn't going anywhere."

I used to do that quite a bit with my blood angels, what with my 37 scouts and 4 landspeeders... Never got the scout bikes though. For me, at least, it's way too expensive for not enough umph (though I do play BA so that scales things up annoyingly...) but go for it! At one point I even made a new chapter with a "veteran scout" unit because I loved them so much...

Another option if you are looking for a scout type army could be Raven Guard. I am currently working on an allied detachment for my Salamanders, because it works so well from a fluff perspective (Raven Guard and Sallies are still really close friends ever since the drop site massacre, whilst the iron hands still hate us for it because they think we should've commited suicide by fighting to the last and have our entire legions wiped out...go figure), and also kind of fills the weaknesses of a fluffy Salamanders army: i.e the lack of Assault Squads, Scouts and Land Speeders. You could even take Korvydae to make Assault Squads troops if you are cool with FW: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhamme..._KORVYDAE.html

Of course, their scouts don't do anything normal scouts don't do: But you can scout move tactical squads and assault squads which is kind of cool, and Korvydae gives a squad hit and run to boot...Perhaps it's not the recon/ranger theme you were looking for, but thought i'd mention Raven Guard because you are also a Sallies player and they work well together in both playstyle and fluff.

That's an awesome idea. I really like the conversions in my original link but these are perfect and would save a lot of hassle.

This is my main worry, that it's great fun to build and paint, but falls apart mercilessly on the table. I'm not overly competitive by any means, but I don't want to get tabled constantly.

Thanks for your thoughts mate, but this would be a standalone army rather than allies, and the RG tactics wouldn't add much to just scouts. If i tried to do another power armour SM army they would all end up with flames on :p
