Default Warhammer 40k Armies Need A Reason To Fight

An article about the importance of fluff when playing Warhammer 40k and Magic The Gathering: Warhammer 40k Armies Need A Reason To Fight

How much importance do you place on having a back story and a reason for your army to be on the field of battle?

I can honestly say none. I dont need a reason to bring my minis to the table other than if someone wants a game. If i needed a reason for every game i wouldnt be in the hobby.

That being said there are certain times when having a backstory adds to the game (such as tournaments or APOC games)

Fluff is important I refuse to play some armies just because of that fact.

Like Swede, the game is a game first. I enjoy the back and forth of playing and will always look for every opportunity I can for a match.

That said, there are times that I enjoy a good "fluffy" game or campaign. And I have done background for my Homebrew marines and I do play a pretty fluffy Harlequin army.

I am the Evil Project Log (All my work since restarting the hobby)
The Crusade of Morr (WFB Empire Battle Reports)
Dem Bones (Dice Rolling Program)

I make sure to place fluff wherever I can, even if it's retroactive or only in my head

I think of a story for the fight in my head, it makes it more interesting to me haha Is it NEEDED? Probably not, but 40k lets you add stories so easily it be stupid not to.

I don't really let fluff interfere; I will prefer certain matchups (CSM hordes vs. Deathwing, Tyranids vs. Imperial Guard, Grey Knights vs. Daemons etc.) because of the fluff but I don't refuse to play games that don't match up.

I do prefer to build lists according to the fluff archetype though. A non-competitive Chaos list I build will have a ridiculously tooled-up HQ and big squads of CSM with Icons, while I pretty much always run both Wings in any given Dark Angel army.

I use the fluff or backstory to help give me a reason to build the army because I like fluffy armies but I have no problem putting models on table to play the game.

"Ahh, isn't Morfang sweet, like a great big 350-pound (that's 25 stone, UK users!) ball of cuddly death...?"

God, gives children to people so that death won't seem so disappointing.

Fluff is the main reason I'm into 40k, this is what got me hooked on the game,i also love the models and painting. The game it self is just something i can do with my model's. Imho i wouldn't like to fight other space marine armies especially dark angels since this is what i collect. Having Belial fight Belial would kill the match for me and i would deny to play it. I love to fight chaos and in general have fluffy lists so i don't usually field DW & RW with other DA companies when we play a fluffy scenario with my friend like capture the Fallen.
