Default Sword + Board... Who's good with them?

So I really want a new conversion project. I tend to have a habit of taking 40k models and making them seem almost fantasy'ish... I love the fact that the Gothic Sci-Fi nature of 40k allows for power swords, Sorcerers with bolters, etc etc.

I would like to build an army that capitalizes on this; 'knights' in powered armor, etc etc. Grey Knights, of course, seems like a good choice (I have an assault list in the forums right now), but I would like to really center around an HQ or squad of impressive looking models, and one of the things I'd love to do is a 'knight' in full armor, with a sword and shield.

However, only Loyalist Marines get Storm Shields. Oh, and Draigo.

With the new codex, a Chapter Master or a Captain can both run with SS/Relic Blade... is that worth it for a character to take? A Terminator can't do it unless you use the Relic Shield, replacing a storm bolter on the standard kit, and I don't think a Relic Blade can exist at all at that point...

Any suggestions for a decent kit for being able to make an interesting character like this would be appreciated. I could go with Draigo + 5 Paladins in a Stormraven, and make that an allied detachment worth nearly half the army, or just maybe a Salamander Chapter Master (MW Relic Blade? Yes please) with an Honor Guard?

It almost sounds like you're possibly looking for BT, DA, and GK. Those all have sword options available to them. Personally, I think the BT with DA allies might be what you're looking for... or vice versa.

You could always do a fuedal guard army with carapace vets, rough riders and bret men at arms as basic guard/ heavy weapon teams if you don't want the elite marine option.

A FLGS I go to is called "Sword & Board," so every time I see this thread...

A Lord/Sorc with MoT and SoC could be modeled with a "chaos storm shield" effectively--as well as another weapon that they can legally use! Fantasy WoC shields are great for that purpose...

CSM Plog, Tactica

What sphinx of plascrete and adamantium bashed open their skulls and ate up their brains and imagination? Imperator! Imperator!

If you are just wanting an army based on looks and are not overly concerned with competitiveness, then I would suggest doing a small Black Templar force.

A command squad can arm itself completely with Storm Shield and Power weapon and would make a great great accompanying squad to a Company Captain so armed.

You could also arm up a Vanguard squad or two, they can all take PW and Storm Shield as well.

Then a crusader squad or two, they can all be armed with "Chainsword", weapons that could be modeled as regular swords, and then the sword brother and another initiate can arm up with power swords.

Plus Black Templars are the epitome of crusading knights.

First Eastern Mirage Corps (C:SM)
I am the Evil Project Log (All my work since restarting the hobby)
The Crusade of Morr (WFB Empire Battle Reports)
Dem Bones (Dice Rolling Program)

BTs with bits from the Empire knights kits or Brettonians would look pretty cool. The Knightly Orders box would give you enough bits to make a few different themed squads. And then if you wanted to use the SW codex the demigryph knights would make great counts-as thunder wolves. Damn, that could turn into a great looking themed army.

That's actually a pretty decent idea. and if I wanted to totally sick with it, I could ally in Draigo and a squad of Paladins with fancy looking halberds.

Mossy: I actually considered something like that, because I do have my Thousand Sons already. Have a really nice squad of Chaos Terminators w/ Mark of Tzeentch and Warscythes (Power Axes), and was considering adding the shields to them as well.

To come totally out of left field an option could be a Grey Knight Inquisitor and Warband.

You can take up to 12 crusaders who are armed only with sword and board, and you can stick an Inquisitor with them.

The Inquisitor can either be Heroic enough to not need a shield or you can use the Inq Valeria character , who has a force shield. To date no one on the planet has used Valeria in a game and would be nice to see her get a run before she is removed from the next Codex.

You could also use Draigo as the main dude for the crusader unit and just have a basic Inq modelled as some kind of minor flunky, but in that case you're making Draigo T3.

Another option is the Forgeworld Hector Rex who has an AWESOME shield.

By the by, if you are doing an Inq style unit I can thoroughly recommend the Scibor "I" shields.

I actually own Rex aleady. He's absolutely one of my favorite models, but his rules were fairly... well, not all that exciting. I actually posted something a few months back about him, in a squad with Cursaders and DCA, and was basically told how poor he was. Well, decent, just not really amazing.

Grey Knights deffinitely sounds like a strong option, possibly with a second army as allies. Draigo and Rex both make great characters for it.

I don't know Valeria, so I'll have to look into that one.
