Default Where do you stop your army?

At what stage do you decide you should stop collecting more models for your main army? I'm up to 2k with my marines and it's my main army and also the only arm thats pretty much fully painted. With the new codex I was considering what I should get and it came upon me that I could quite easily not add anything, even the anti air tank is an optional extra as I have an ADL.

I have a number of projects on the go but I'm kind of proud of my marine army, it's the only army I've ever almost completed painting wise, should I keep adding to it though so I have options or should I focus on my other projects that's the question going around my head atm.

But what's your limit, when did you or will you stop adding to your main army?

When it looks 'right', or when I can't make a better 2000pts list. As this is constantly in flux, I'd say an army is never finished. I'm taking a break from Dark Angels, maybe for a long time, but I'm far from done with them - I need a more significant Ravenwing contingent for a start, and more Mortis Dreadnoughts - but for now I have everything I want for my 2000pt games (just need the paint it).

I'm sorry, I don't understand the question. Stop collecting? People do that?

Yeah as in, you have an army and there's no point you can see in continuing to add stuff to it.

I think he ment more along the lines of when do you stop with your current project to move on to the next.

For me, atleast with my Daemons, I was thinking of stopping around 1,500Pts then start another army so that eventually both armies can reach 2,000Pts through allies. That way I can work on many different models without it getting too repeditive and it offers a lot of variation to every army I field^^.

Nope, sorry, still not getting it.

Seriously though, I can never see me not adding to my SWs. Even now when I've decided to start a Tau army, I'm looking at the new SM stuff and picking what I'll buy to add to my Great Company. I have about 3000pts painted, about another 2000 unassembled and unpainted, but they will still grow.

I think you should stop when it's no longer fun or you can't justify spending the money.

I'm generally with Khorne's Fist on this.

I don't play much anymore, but I picked up a few daemon engines from the new Chaos codex. I've been playing chaos since the early 90's and I still enjoy painting, sculpting, and converting them. I can field some ridiculous number of points (I have something like 7 dreadnought class walkers, with more in pieces), far more than I could possibly use since i haven't played Apocalypse. But at this point if I can afford a model and I have the time to paint it then it's all good. These days between family, work, and grad school I don't have much free time. And besides I have a ton of projects planned but never started/completed. So I should really finish those before buying new stuff.

But I have played chaos across all 6 editions of 40k. I have all the codices. Every codex has somewhat different units and rules. Even if I only refresh my army every time the game changes I still foresee being able to always have new stuff to paint (and maybe someday when my kids are out of college =( play again).

I haven't gotten tired of Chaos Marines in 20 years so I think I'm pretty safe. They will remain my favorites and stay interesting to me for a looong time.

I hope that helps!

p.s. - I should update my army showcase to include . . . if not all my models, a full roster of units.

For me it's always been once I've got enough to make a 1.5k list plus the ability to add and remove stuff so that I can change it up. That's how it's been for my 'Nidzilla and DE, Marines, Sisters etc.

But until I get myself a job I can't fund Nidzilla, DE, Sisters, Marines. So I've decided to go for a different tac, since I can't fund 4 different armies that I can't even use as allies. Using my Limited Edition Iron Hands cover as an impetus, I'm starting an Imperium army, this why I can build up my Iron Hands, Vostryon Firstborn, Sisters, slowly and expand without certain armies and such being a waste of money. So I'll be able to buy and expand without limitation.

When I have every army list I can seriously consider running with the army. Just about reached that point with CSM (7k points) and Daemons (5k points), and am only a half dozen tanks out of feeling complete with this edition of IG (3k points so far), though I suspect that their rumored March-ish release will have me buying another 1-2k points to make a newly competitive/flexible army. I could easily be kept happy painting the 12.5k points of these minis that have only been primed, so I suspect I'll be buying less Warhammer in the short-term future...

Beyond that, I may well branch into vanilla marines as my future projects, making Sons of Medusa with a ton of Dreads, or something.
