I've been thinking about this a bit. The problem I see is that all the good aliens are taken. Ancients check? Warlike uber tough done. Machines yup. Swarm consume all? uh huh.

The only real ideas I see are ones based off of war of the worlds. But more intelligent or trade federation style. Cowards who use machines.

The Hrud would make a cool Codex. They have been known to wipe out entire Space Marine Chapters... I mean Tyranids have a hard time doing that once in a while, so they have to be powerful enough to wage war with the big boys. Also I found out in the Warhammer wiki that the rumor goes that the Hrud where going to be 40ks Skaven, so that's something too...

Other then that I found this race called Tarellians (or the Tarellian Dog-Soldiers) They kind of look like Lizardmen, but it would seem they where mostly wiped out by Mankind durning the Great Crusade, and now work for the Tau as mercenaries, much like the Kroot.

the problem with the Hrud being rats, is once again mantic games have the army to take legal action vs GW.

And if you want different aliens in your tau codex, just make up counts as fire warriors. ive done that with lizardmen for my mate, worked out really well.

But dont forget that while tau are the coalition force, they are known to wipe out indigenous populations that dont join them, so no wonder there arnt more in their rules.

i wouldnt mind seeing a non humanoid race, space worms or (earthworm Jim...), some sort of true bug, like a beetle based or something.

heck, even an army of droids would be fricken cool,

We do know that all the major factions have no problem wiping out another race. There probably used to be many more sentient races in the galaxy. But if they weren't space-faring, chances are they were absorbed or destroyed. The Hrud are space-faring but control even less territory than the Tau. They are apparently well consolidated to hold their territory. The Barghessi seem to be confined to the Grendl Stars, implying not space-faring. I would have liked to see them accompanying DE Beast Masters(it's in the fluff), but oh well. So most other sentient life is likely gone or part of another force. Grey Knights have Jokaero; Tau have Kroot and Vespid; and Dark Eldar have Sslythe and a few other mercenary races hanging around.

More races and even Ad Mech would be nice. But with so much out there already, GW runs the risk of violating another IP. And then there is the great and powerful "codex creep."

"Fetch me another plaything. This one seems to have broken." -Urien Rakarth

Space Marine- "This planet is ours, witch."
Eldar- "No ... This planet is theirs ..."

I think there is room for another alien race. The rate at which they are pumping out updates for both games leaves room at the end of the cycle for a whole new codex with brand new units.

The problem I see, as has already been pointed out, is which meta to place them in? We have shooty in various degrees (Tau, Eldar and Dark Eldar), good all rounders (Necron) and close combat (Tyranids). Personally I would like a reasonable all round army with an emphasis on staying power and short range fire power. They dont have to be bipedal either, but nids do take up a lot of the multilimbed options.

And mantic may have space rats and space dwarfs, but that doesnt stop GW doing thier own versions as long as the names and design are thier own.

Your toast has been burnt and no amount of scraping will get rid of the black bits.

Necrons? They epitomise this.

Just wait for whatever the Tyranids are running from!

Some kind of ogre-allies for orks?
A whole cyborg race? Mechanicus?
I would like some parasitic creature that when killing a foe gains a wound or a whole new model to the unit on a 5+. Could be quite scary!
A race where the maintroop is some kind of beast or cavalary would be nice.

Good to be green

In fact, five different units could be easily accommodated. The troop box set could contain options for two different units, likewise with the other one. Perhaps the HQ box could allow a regular HQ and a psyker.

In any case, I don't think a whole new codex race is really necessary but the allies system definitely opens up possibilities for mini factions

Let's shrink down the number of Space Marine codices before we start adding more... I don't necessarily think that there aren't enough Xenos, but the ones we do have get waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too little attention.
