Default Centerpiece to an IG Mech Army?

I have put together around 5K of IG, and now I am looking for a Centerpiece to it all.

The question is what do I choose as the centerpiece for my Mech Army?

Baneblade
Banehammer
Banesword
Doomhammer
Hellhammer
Shadowsword
Stormblade
Stormlord
Stormsword

Also I want the model to be playable so models that don't have rules (Stormhammer) aren't of use to me.

I ask that you explain why you made the choice you did! Thanks for the help all!

Shadowswords and Stormblades both look pretty bitchin', although honestly any of the super-heavies are good centrepieces. Personally, I'd go with the Baneblade because I like it the most (like the basic LRBT, and the basic Terminator - ain't none of these new-fangled 'variations' gonna tempt me).

I'm debating the same thing! Except I only have 1500 pts of guard, and it's a blob-mech combo. It seems to me that if you have 5000 pts, you must play a bunch of apocalypse, so a Shadowsword might be a good centerpiece for you. Destroyer weapons are supposed to be amazing in apoc games.

If you play on a more standard-sized board where the deployment zones are 24" apart, I'd say a Stormsword. With the prevalence of cover saves, a S10AP1 weapon that ignores cover is invaluable. And the size of that template means death for whatever squad you pick as your target. Personally, since the max-sized game I'd play in my meta is 2500, a Stormsword is my front runner.

Oh also, not sure if you're aware of this, but the new Forgeworld FAQ states that the ordnance snap-fire rules no longer apply to superheavy vehicles. So you can move at combat speed and fire ALL weapons, including your primary, at full ballistics skill--and every weapon can fire at a separate target!

It's good to be Guard.

I actually don't play a lot of a lot of Apocalypse. I just made sure that I maximized my choices. Plus I play Mech so it runs more expensive. 2500 would probably be my max points game. This is just the last thing I am buying for my IG Army, so I am trying to decide what to get.

If call it the last, then make it count! Get a Warhound, save up a bit longer and make the finale count. Nothing says Centerpiece like a titan. Good points timing though. I always say 1 super heavy per 5k

I thought about going the Titan route, but I am a tread Head and really want a Super Heavy to finish it all off. My "Regiment" is a Mech Regiment so this is a Fluff Purchase as much as it is a playability purchase.

Ah well, truth be told any of those variants you listed would look intense fielded with your army. Its your list make the choice you like most rules/play wise

Like you I'm a diehard treadie, and as much as I like Titans I always looked at it from the pov that I could buy 3/4 Baneblades (and varients) for the same $cost.
Which is what I did

I'd go with the Baneblade, especially if it's going to be your sole super-heavy purchase. Fluff-wise it's the epitomie of IG and very iconic....and not too shabby on the battleground either, but definitely more of an all-rounder rather than a specialist varient like the Shadowsword.

My 2c anyway....they all look pretty damn sweet on the board.

For the moment it will be the sole super heavy purchase. I am sure I'll never stop growing my Guard army.
