Default Number of specialists in a Chapter?

Hey folks,

I was wondering how many specialists an average SM Chapter has.

With specialists I refer to Librarians, Techmarines, Chaplains, Apothecaries and the likes.

I think I sort of overdid that while writing the background of my chapter...
*mumbles something about 37 Chaplains*

Thanks!

This could be helpful: http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Code...s#.UEkfmN1lR8M

"Atrocity is recognized as such by victim and predator alike, by all who learn about it at whatever remove. Atrocity has no excuses, no mitigating argument. Atrocity never balances or rectifies the past. Atrocity merely arms the future for more atrocity. It is self-perpetuating upon itself a barbarous form of incest. Whoever commits atrocity also commits those future atrocities thus bred."

"All governments suffer a recurring problem: Power attracts pathological personalities. It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible. Such people have a tendency to become drunk on violence, a condition to which they are quickly addicted."

I'd say around 10 is about right of each speciality. So 10 chaplains, 10 tech marines and then 10 apothecaries. Of those there's probably 5 to 20 more candidates and understudies for the position. So at a minimum 45 specialist personnel at a max around 90. Of these each individual probably has 30-70 support personnel. Meaning each head of the command speciality has thousands of support staff to get stuff done.

Librarians probably have a lot limited number due to their nature and strict management. 37 chaplains is a possibility, but that's a lot of men of the faith in one place.

Well the number of number of specialists varies from chapter to chapter but on average that have around 3,000+ support staff.

Ultramarines are Pussies

Except Dark Angels, any chapter that sounds like a Death Metal Band can't be that bad.

And, included in this support staff are the very rarely mentioned shakers, bakers, and candlestick makers.

According to the Codex Astartes, you have a Chaplain attached to each company (so 10), plus several as part of the Reclusiam which are part of the Headquarters staff. So 15 is a reasonable number, but a particularly pious Chapter might have more. Same goes for Apothecaries-- Chapters like the Red Scorpions have more, for example, but 15 is a decent estimate for most Chapters since you have one in each Company plus those who make up the Apothecarion. Techmarines probably vary, but I'd figure 15 or so is a reasonable number when you consider how varied their jobs are. As for Librarians, it varies very much by Chapter-- but I'd say 15 is still a reasonable number-- you have the Chief Librarian, three or so Epistolaries, five or so Codeciers, and maybe around six to eight Lexicanum.

I figure you got most of this right. But you have to remember that Techmarines are responsible for every vehicle in a chapter's arsenal. But the actual number could depend on the chapter's standing with the Ad Mech.

Page 9 of Codex Blood Angels lists the full chapter structure circa 999.M41. They have 22 Sanguinary Priests(Apothecaries) including the High Priest. Bare in mind that this is a unit crucial to the fluff, play and survival of the Blood Angels chapter, so it may be more than most. They have 14 Chaplains, which feels rather small given they have Chaplains and Reclusiarchs in their command structure. A more pious/"righteous" chapter, such as BT or DA could easily double this number I'm sure. The BA also have 36 Librarians, including their 5 Libby Dreads. But the codex also says BA are more prone to the Psyker mutation than most chapters. I figure Son of Horus has better numbers here. The BA then have 35 Techmarines and 105 Servitors to maintain their 144 combat vehicles, such as Predators, Stormravens and Land Raiders. Note that the 144 does not include Rhinos and Razorbacks and the BA are not on the best terms with the Ad Mech..

With all that said, a chapter having around 30 Chaplains could be possible. But it would have less of the other specialist figures due to personnel limits. That's assuming they follow the Codex Astartes of course.

Codex Astartes, uh.. yeah, we follow that.. *cough cough* Very strict mister Inquisitor sir. What? Over 1000 fully fledged battle brothers? No, can't say I've seen em.

Well, my Chapter doesn't follow the Codex that strictly, and is notorious for being highly religious. So I guess the Chaplains might work out, I'll have to add some techmarines though... (Currently have 23 and my Chapter uses plenty of Dreads.)

Apothecaries are around what you guys suggested. (I had 14.)
I'll keep the Libbies low though. (7 at the moment.) As my Chapter isn't very fond of arcane rituals and tempering with the warp, plus I wrote something about suppressed psyker abilities, have to look that up.

Thanks for all te help guys, much appriciated!

I can't see why you couldn't have more Chaplains in a devout Chapter. The Word Bearers had far more than any other Legion, and was considered more-or-less equal to a Company's Captain; they worked as a pair. And if your Chapter is bigger than a regular one, and it doesn't adhere quite so strictly to the Codex, then why not have 50? The more the merrier I say. The Black Templars probably have more anyway; there are thousands of those guys.

As many as you need to make the fluff work. If you need 1 per company and 1 Reclusiarch, then you can have 11. If you need one per squad, you can have 100. If you need none because the fluff is that you severely pissed off the Officio Assassinorum, you can have none.
