I think anything that has high individual point costs are quite cost-efficient in terms of dollars.

The problem with space wolves and so on is that they know the popularity and as such, they seem to charge a premium - $50 for 5 terminators is not cost effective, even though terminators are fairly pricey units. (look on Amazon though - those same space wolf terminators you want that are 50 retail are 37 on amazon, new in box)

Necrons have proven pretty cost effective, though how competitive you can be with them is unsure. Necron give you quite a few bonuses in the boxes.

A box of necron warriors for example have 12 figures AND 4 (if you do 3 scarabs a base) bases of scarabs. That's a solid deal and both units are pretty useful.

The annihilation barge is a great little heavy support weapon. If you use it that way, you get a "free" necron overlord.

So right there, you can pick up 2 10 man squads of warriors, 8 bases of scarabs, an overlord and an annihilation barge for 28x3 (off amazon) = $84

That's 620 pts if you give the overlord some standard upgrades.

You can get necron destroyers from Amazon for $17 if you want them btw.

Imotekh is dollar per point highly efficient - $18 for 225

Probably wanna pop for a ghost ark at least. (43 on amazon)

Doomsday ark? (43)

Probably want to pop for 2 elite units - lets say Deathmarks and lychgaurd. Or whatever... choice is yours but whatever you choose it's going to be 28 a piece. Assume you want a nightscythe for the deathmarks (even though the vehicle isn't likely to be out til new year) (56)

1555pts

Imotekh
Necron Overlord with MSS, Resurrection orb
5x Deathmarks + Night Scythe
5x Lychguard

10x Warrior + Ghost Ark
10x Warrior

(4 spare warriors)

8x Canoptek Scarabs

Annihilation Barge
Doomsday Ark

Total cost: $244 (+23?? for the night scythe when it releases)

Is it a great version of the list? Probably not the most competitive, but at an initial investment of $244 that seems like a pretty solid start.

On top of that, you could do some sneaky magnetizing on the annihilation barge and the ghost arks to make it so they can be command platforms or doomsday arks and really make some efficiencies.

Ok, we'll if I've got what your saying right:

Imotekh 10.50
Necron OverLord 10.50
Ann. Barge 20.50
Ghost/Doom Ark X2 62.00
Deathmarks 20.50
Lychguard 20.50
Necron Warriors X2 41.00

TOTAL: 185 (+Plus codex 20 = 205)

Which for a full army, is a pretty good price!

I've found that just one box of Space Wolf Wolf Guard/Bloodclaws has enough bits to convert a LOT of normal marines into Space Wolves, and they can work pretty well without too many transports, so they can wind up being more cost effective than basic marines, which more or less need a rhino/razorback for every unit in the army.

Just my two teef.

The first casualty of war is always subtlety.

Not sure what UK Amazon is like selection wise for warhammer, but from what I have seen... grey knights (5) 14.99 (20 on GW website) ... seems like the discounts are pretty deep too. didn't see much necron though.

If your not picky about GW sculpts IG can be cheap. You can get plastic army men by the bucket .

Space Marines or Grey Knights.

GK's purely for the low model count.

Space Marines because you can bag "Job Lots" on Ebay as long as you don't give a hoot about the way things are posed. I've seen oh, maybe 2k's worth of stuff going for around 50.

The cheapest, buying retail not special ebay deals, is to use a Space Marine battleforce box or the starter box space marines. The starter box comes with about 615pts worth of space marines and costs about $80 US. Then, if you sell the orks and books you might get half or more of that back. So, you get about half your army for $40.
