Default New To Cosplay, Any Pointers?

So I've yet to cosplay and also yet to been to a anime/comic convention (I know I know)
but I'd really like to give cosplay a try at the next con in GA whenever that may be. Has anyone ever cosplayed before? Do you prefer to buy costumes or make them? Any pointers for a newbie?

I'm inexperienced in all this but I will say one thing: when you do, post pictures!

I made an incredible Scarecrow costume (check my user pic) and a Pyramid Head costume from Silent Hill (check the pic below). I adore making Halloween costumes, so maybe I can help you if you tell me exactly what you want to cosplay?

Drop me a PM.

its not my thing but my sister is into cosplay in a big way, and from what she says making your own is a must and buying an off the rack one is frowned upon, having someone make one for you and you alone is also quite common, she says it as much about the creation of a costume as it is attending the events to show it off.
Anyway, she has been doing it as a hobby for well over 10 years, shes got a dress makers dummy in the front room, sewing machines and is a regular at Leeds market picking up fabric, shes pretty good too, she normally takes two costumes to a convention, one for each day, there are parades and i think prizes in categories.
