750 point Chaos Space Marines

Hi all,

I'm just returning to the hobby after many years away, and I'm sure that there are a lot of gaps in my knowledge. That being said, I'm working on a less-than-ambitious figure of 750 points for my army at this early stage, and I'd love to get some feedback on how it looks from some more experienced players than myself...

HQ
-1 Chaos Sorceror Lord
--Mark of Slaanesh
--Lash of Submission
--Jump Pack/Wings

TROOPS
-8 Khorne Berzerkers
--Skull Champion
--Power Weapon
--Rhino
-6 Noise Marines
--6 Sonic Blasters
--Rhino

FAST ATTACK
-5 Chaos Raptors
--2 Flamers

HEAVY SUPPORT
-1 Obliterator

Total = 748 pts

The idea is for the Sorcerer to join with the Raptors, and cause some havoc with Lash of Submission and mobile assault back-up. Everything else is pretty self-explanatory, I think.

I've come up with a couple of different variations on the same theme. If anyone could tell me which of these generally looks best for 5th edition's environment, and also for fighting Dark Elder (who will be my most frequent opponent) that'd be appreciated.

VARIATION 1

HQ
-1 Chaos Sorceror Lord
--Mark of Slaanesh
--Lash of Submission
--Jump Pack/Wings

TROOPS
-7 Khorne Berzerkers
--Skull Champion
--Power Weapon
--Rhino
-10 Chaos Space Marines
--2 Flamers
--Rhino

FAST ATTACK
-5 Chaos Raptors
--2 Meltaguns

HEAVY SUPPORT
-1 Obliterator

Total = 747 pts

Variation 2

HQ
-1 Daemon Prince
--Mark of Slaanesh
--Lash of Submission
--Jump Pack/Wings

TROOPS
-7 Khorne Berzerkers
--Skull Champion
--Power Weapon
--Rhino
-5 Chaos Space Marines
--1 Flamer
--Rhino
-5 Chaos Space Marines
--1 Flamer
--Rhino

HEAVY SUPPORT
-1 Obliterator
-1 Obliterator

Total = 747 pts

Variation 3

HQ
-1 Daemon Prince
--Mark of Nurgle
--Nurgle's Rot
--Jump Pack/Wings

TROOPS
-8 Khorne Berzerkers
--Skull Champion
--Power Weapon
--Rhino
-7 Chaos Space Marines
--1 Flamer
--Rhino
-6 Chaos Space Marines
--1 Flamer
--Rhino

HEAVY SUPPORT
-1 Obliterator

Total = 748 pts

And just because I can't stop tweaking the build...

Variation 4

HQ
-1 Daemon Prince
--Jump Pack/Wings

TROOPS
-8 Khorne Berzerkers
--Skull Champion
--Power Weapon
--Rhino
-8 Chaos Space Marines
--1 Flamer
--Rhino
-7 Chaos Space Marines
--1 Meltagun
--Rhino

HEAVY SUPPORT
-1 Obliterator

Total = 748 pts

Yeah archermonkey has the right idea, swap the sorceror with a DP for sure. hardier, plus since youre only taking one psychic power, the daemon prince is tougher for what you want.

thats it. pretty good. about what i started with, hahah.

How about this:

HQ
-1 Daemon Prince
--Mark of Slaanesh
--Lash of Submission
--Jump Pack/Wings

TROOPS
-8 Khorne Berzerkers
--Skull Champion
--Power Fist
--Rhino
-10 Chaos Space Marines
--2 Flamers
--Rhino

HEAVY SUPPORT
-1 Obliterator
-1 Obliterator

Total = 743 pts

You still have 7 points left over but I can't think of anything to add.

Looks good, but I'd take the Obliterators in 1 squad of 2, and take a Meltagun in the Chaos Marines.

1 squad of 2 means less flexibility and requires them to stay closer together. Breaking them apart means that they can fire at more targets and can be deployed separately.

@DeathToTheEmp: Thanks. And yeah, that's what I figured after looking at it a little harder: unless I'm strapped for points, or want a second power (taken with a Familiar), then the Daemon Prince seems to be the much better option.

@the Brayn: Interesting. How vital is it to get the squad of CSMs to 10 men, though, at 750 points? Is there any value in the idea of upgrading to an Aspiring Champion with a Power Fist, and taking fewer CSMs to pay the difference?

@broken: As for the Obliterators, I was thinking exactly the same thing as the Brayn. Having two of them means that I can select multiple targets if need be, and they won't be so easy to take out all at once with a template or single assault. Obviously it would be ideal to have more than one per unit in any size game, but with only 750 points, this seems to be the best compromise.

Re: Melta... I'm partial to that solution myself, though it means splitting weapon types in a single unit. In one of my variants, I gave one small CSM squad a Flamer and one a Melta, so they could focus on different roles. Giving them one of each makes them more adaptable, but less focussed. It's touch to know where to come down on that particular question. I think the best way might be to just playtest both.

You're right; play-testing is nearly always the best way to see how effective different builds are. I'd also recommend this with the Obliterators, as there are advantages to both separating them and keeping them together.

Play testing different builds is always a good idea. I have mostly found that in games of 500-750 teaming up the oblits has more drawbacks than benefits. Generally speaking, you shouldn't run into many high AV vehicles at 750 because they are usually too expensive to be worth it. Wasted shots at this points level can mean the difference between a win or a loss.

I would personally keep the CSM squad at full strength because I like to have a fair number of troops on the board. You already have 2 oblits, a DP, and a PF zerker on the table the pop vehicles and walkers. Besides a low threat CSM squad might be good for holding an objective. Low threat tends to mean low target priority, especially in this list.
