Default Chaos HQ

Okay, I've looked at the codex repeatedly and for the life of me I cannot see a reason to not take Daemon princes for my HQ. Everything the Sorcorer or the Lord can do, the Daemon Prince can do better with better survivability. So from a strictly strategic point of view, why would I not take a Daemon Prince? Or even better, is there any reason why I wouldn't take a pair of them?

It seems like every CSM list I read has a pair of Daemon princes.

Kharn Compared to Daemon prince
165 points compared to 120 points
WS 7 compared to 7
S 5 compared to 6
T 4 compared to 5
3 W compared to 4
I 5 compared to 5
5 Attacks compared to 5
3+/5+ saves compared to 3+/5+

Kharn is Immune to Psychic powers and Force Weapons don't work on him. Granted, and he's always going to hit on a 2+, but then again even with out that special rules he's WS 7. So the Daemon Prince is going to be hitting nearly as often.

Add to that the fact that the Daemon prince is a monstrous creature so he's going to be better at busting tanks and is going to ignore saves on regular fud-fuds anyway and it's got EW to boot so it can't be doubled out.

So I guess I should extend my question to include Kharn now. Why would I take Kharn, a Sorcerer or a Lord over a Daemon Prince?

Kharn also rolls as an MC vs Vehicles. He has more attacks, a Plasma Pistol (better than nothing!)

He can hide in a Rhino. Basically, that's what it comes down to. He can avoid being shot to death for at least one turn.

hmmm interesting point.

A Daemon Prince can't be doubled out, but also can't hide in a Rhino/Unit.
Kharn can be doubled out but can hide in a Rhino/unit.

So the Daemon Prince MUST fail 4 saves in order to be taken out of the game where has if Kharn gets hit by a Lascannon/Krak Missile/Rail Gun/Melta gun, he can fail a single save and go bye bye but he can hid in a rhino for a turn or two to avoid this danger.

Especially if in a unit of Plague Marines, too.
And you pop smokes/deploy behind another etc.

Way I see cost - it's Kharn, or TWO DPs. So he's waaay cheaper.

I was about to say that models with one Mark can't join a unit with a different mark, but then I remembered "Oh right, they left out the whole animosity concept in this Chaos Codex"

Daemon Prince's are chosen for all the reason's you stated. A pair of them running next top each other is a scary thing. Sadly they have no ranged weapons(they got powers; but those don't count) and they attract a lot of fire power. Hence, bring two.

While on the topic of Special Characters; I like Lucius more than Kharn. (Now all the Insane-Khorne worshipers are going to bitch at me)

I think each character has a purpose and a reason to field them. Sure a daemon prince can kill or scare the crap out of anything and may be the ideal choice for a HQ but they are monstrous creatures and will get the crap shot out of them before the reach the enemy. Typhus for example I think has around 3 base attacks but has a massive scythe which is a force weapon and daemon weapon of nurgle so he is best for multi-wound-high-save-heavy-infantry-death-star units and he can be attached to some plague terminators with lightning claws. Vanilla lords and sorcerers are like molding putty or gap filler you can build them to go with your army and fill gaps as well as provide units with well needed leadership. They also can be fun to play around with because a Juggernaut riding khorne lord with blood feeder and Juggernaut mounted retinue wont go unnoticed but they will be great fun on the field.

Sir Nom Nom will eat your brains if you dare not to click on him. Where do you think he got his name?

Lucius isn't terrible. But Kharn is a beast.

As for Typhus, tell him to call me when he figures out how to cut through Storm Shields. Until then, he's trash. He may have the chance to ID one enemy/turn with his Force Weapon, but Kharn has a pile of S6 Attacks. Plus, Kharn will usually get to strike...
