frankly the only reason to take a lord or sorcerer, ifbecause the can be hidden in squads, which i find typically boosts their survivablitity. otherwise take a prince.

Typhus for example I think has around 3 base attacks but has a massive scythe which is a force weapon and daemon weapon of nurgle so he is best for multi-wound-high-save-heavy-infantry-death-star units and he can be attached to some plague terminators with lightning claws. Vanilla lords and sorcerers are like molding putty or gap filler you can build them to go with your army and fill gaps as well as provide units with well needed leadership. They also can be fun to play around with because a Juggernaut riding khorne lord with blood feeder and Juggernaut mounted retinue wont go unnoticed but they will be great fun on the field.
The problem with putting a lord on Juggy is that he's not calvery. So putting him in a Bike squad (Which Is what I believe you meant when you said mounted retinue since chosen can take bikes) is you've just taken the bike squad's best advantage, speed, and thrown it out the window. The Juggy just adds +1 S and +1 attack and prohibits the mounted lord from being able to be transported. It does not change his unit type or movement style.

In a sense, both. The Lord/Sorc doesn't get Krak Missile'd, and the squad gets to live a little longer to small arms when they can be put on the 2+ guy with 3W instead of a 3+ 1W bloke.

Daemon Prince Vs anything else IMO:

Ppl said that ICs can hide in squads, but you can hide your prince behind a LR for example.
The lords have obviously one gear a prince cannot compete with, and thats the daemonweapon. +D6 attacks, with IK or poison 4+, or 2D6 attacks. Not bad, for particular roles.
A Slaanesh lord can cut through multiwound units, like oliterators, ork nobs and not EW characters.
A Khorne lord can have ridicuos ammount of attacks with PW
A Nurgle lord can easily kill nidzillas and other high T models (Mephiston eg.)
A Tzeench lord can shoot D6 Ap3 from a rhino for example.

The Sorceres are pretty much the same as a Prince, but: they can have a familiar, allowing an extra spell to make your HQ a bit more all rounded.
And they have force weapons, so can IK annoying characters, what a prince can't do. (not with a single hit at least)

And finally, all of them can have personal icons, and can be sacrificed for a greater daemon. A prince cant do either.

The named characters are another issue, they all have their personal toys wich you may consider worthy or you may not.

Don't get me wrong, i use 2 Princes in every list i write, but those are the reasons on the others side.
