Default stupid noob question (first army) need help!

so im new to warhammer 40 k and havnt played a game yet (always played warhammer fantasy), i like the new look of the new dark vengence game
and plan on purchasing it on saturday,

i am in love with the look of the chaos space marines

but checking over the total army i like the look of most of the units.

and then i notice most armys are one particular type of army like korne army etc

my question is, can i make a army with what ever i want in it? within the rules of course?

couldnt find the answer to my question anywhere else.

also any advice on collecting my chaos space marine army seeing i'll be starting with the box set?
what else should i get? any hints?

what shouldnt i get?

thank you and sorry for being a pain with my beginners question

Yes you can make an army with whatever you want from the codex, e.g. thousands suns, beserkers and normal chaos marines all together in one army.

and welcome to the hobby and heresy

my advice is be wary around special characters and specialized units, anything that could logically disappear in the upcoming codex. I'd almost just stick with the starter set and marines for now.

Stick with the starter set and wait a month of two, there should be a new codex coming out for them, which also means new models.

Adding one or two squads of infantry before anything more specialised seems to be good idea. Infantrymen are core of army, even if you will want to focus on heavy or fast units.

Do NOT get a vindicator. It is too easy to shoot down and never makes up for its points. Defiler and obliterators over a vindicator anydayFor your first couple games you can use normal marines and proxy them as the other marines to try them out. I am sure whoever you play against wouldnt mind you doing that. THen once you find out which you like most then you can decide (wait until the new codex comes out though). I personally love plague amrines and thousand sons. Some people say that they arent worth the points but I disagree as they always do well. Good Luck with chaos.

Seems pretty solid to say stick with the Chaos battleforce, Slannesh Sorcerer with Lash of submission for a HQ. Read up on lash it's a beauty

Can anyone share a link about this new upcoming Chaos Codex or is it just rumours?
