i've read most of Khârn: Eater of Worlds and I would say I like it. I might agree that it's a bit short and it sucks that Skalatrax isn't included in the novel which I think would have been a perfect climax for it. I would have wanted to see more of the EC-side of it all, kinda to have more of a antagonist-POW.

In regards to the Horus heresy, I have rarely been disappointed, in fact some of the best books I have ever read have been from the horus heresy. Now that's obviously just my opinion. The author that always delivers is fan Annette. Has not once failed me. McNeill is hit and miss. A thousand sons was good but seemed to drag on forever. I really enjoyed the knight errant parts in vengeful spirit, but the battle scenes with horus made me cringe.

I'm 80% through this and to be fair I'm not hating it. It actually has a decently written viewpoint between the beaten WE's and I thought it would be much worse. It's good to continue reading about this short traitor contested era after finishing The Talon of Horus and to a lesser extend the Ahriman series.

Iit definitely should have been reinforced when it was first listed that it was the first in a series depicting Kharn's fall though. Fact is though that it still doesn't say anything about this on BL which is a horrible effort - unless the idea has been canned?

I think I must be the only person who thinks McNeill is one of the best authors Black Library have, his books rarely disappoint and in my humble opinion I think A Thousand Sons is one of the best books in the Heresy where as Abnetts take on Prospero failed in every way, to me that was a truly boring book and I find the Gaunts Ghosts books a real slog to get through, don't get me wrong Abnett has done some books I really like Legion, Know No Fear and Unremembered Empire are all top draw . I know I'm in the minority with this viewpoint but I just don't understand the general dislike of McNeil.
Storm of Iron - 9/10, Fulgrim - 10/10, A Thousand Sons - 10/10, Mechanicum - 8/10, Angel Exterminatus - 9/10, Vengeful Spirit - 8/10, The Outcast Dead - ok you've got me there that was shit.

Well I certainly liked Thousand Sons more that Prospero Burns, but I really don't like it when they make a very human mortal man or woman the centerpiece of a story about superhumans. I find it unnecessary and annoying as a story-telling tool.

I thought you must have been describing yourself for a moment when you said you enjoyed The Outcast Dead.

I had more fun leopard crawling through sheep shit and gorse bushes than reading that book.

The enjoyment of books is down to your perception on things. Some days, I don't mind getting down and dirty watching a Michael Bay movie, got to admit, but you can't compare something like The Rock to something like Heat, or Collateral. On the other hand, he can turn out something reasonable alright - Bad Boys 2 in this analogy - but that doesn't stop it being a shit film, albeit enjoyably shit, which is what A Thousand Sons kind of was.

But it's still shit. A bit like Con Air.

Hey I love that film. Conner and Cage, it's where it's at! Massively over the top in areas, but just all about their interactions. That and the score was immense.

Of course a lot depends on your mood when you start reading...I must have been in a generous spirit!

I must add I've pretty much stopped reading the HH series now as nothing happens and I feel like I'm being taken for a mug.
