Recent novel Commissar
Has anyone else on here read this yet? I saw the post for Fire Caste today and was glad I found it before I bought it...saved me 8 bucks!
Anyways, I did purchase Commissar by Andy Hoare a few weeks back and finally finished it. I thought it was mildly entertaining but I didn't think there was all that much new or creative in the book.
It all seemed straight forward without any surprising twists and turns. All of the characters introduced were very two dimensional, including the Commissar, and I really didn't particularly care who lived or died. I also wasn't a very big fan of how he chose to describe the actual prison facility. Normally I can create a decent image in my mind about what the author is trying to describe, but for some reason I could never picture what the author was trying to make this prison look like (especially the flooding weir areas to anyone who's read it).
I also really do enjoy Gaunt and Cain, but I don't really think we need another "I could execute you right now, but I think I'd rather motivate you some other way" Commissar. I know it would be hard to create a character that actually easily off's his troopers and have him be a focal point, but then again it might be a refreshing take compared to all the good guy Commissars that seem to be out there.
So has anyone else read it yet? Were your thoughts on par with mine or did I miss something?
