Wait...

There were people who genuinely thought that this initial release of one box set was going to be the whole of Age of Sigmar?

Wow...

a physical rulebook that will include a lot more rules and should include points costs for troops (or something akin).
Also magic.......
I certainly hope this is true, as it would flesh out the game and balance it much more, however everyone from GW I have spoken to have said all rules will be available for free including new releases, so it would seem like a really dumb u-turn, and it doesn't make much sense why, if they were going to introduce points, they haven't done so on the already released warscrolls

MidnightSun: There will be, when enough people do it. Y'know when the Eldar were all engaging in their hedonism and Slaanesh ripped open the Eye of Terror with his creation? Fresh from Warhammer World where GW is telling about AoS:

"BIG NEWS: There is not going to be a big rule book. However, there is already in the worls a set of rules for competetive and tournament play.

Points dont matter so much, because everything will be based on scenarios. There will be - his words - literally hundreds. You will never need to play the same scenario twice.

Added to this there are dozens of campaigns in the works, all of which will expand on the rules and warscrolls available.

Additionally, the 'silly' special rules already seen in the warscroll releases have been done as a homage to older characters and units. These are not due to continue going forward.

So - no BRB, but there will be rules for competition. Oh, and list building is now avcomplished througj working out the sinergy between wars rolls. As you dont have to pay for equiptment anymore, and optimizing is therefore out the window, getting units to work more efficiently is all accomplished through which warscrolls you choose and how they can make the units around them better."

Well that settles it - When this comes, I'm diving into Fantasy.

Whilst initial impressions may indicate no thought whatsoever and random choices, this game has been worked on since they decided to do the End Times. I can guarantee the next few months will be packed full of nothing but AoS releases, as the last year has been little but 40k.

Let's face it, GW sucks when it comes to initial releases. 3rd Ed 40k, Finecast... Give it some time to build up steam and you may be pleasantly surprised. If not, well, do you still have your favourite edition of whfb at home? I know I do...

Also, GW has always been about the miniatures. It is a miniatures company, and the rules have always been secondary to selling toy soldiers. They aren't even subtle about this. Bear this in mind

Absolutely. This is a sticker they gave everyone about 2 years ago during a weird staff-indoctrination session they sprung on us:

All of that sounds great, to me at least. I know plenty of people dig the whole mix and match and build optimal unit configuration, but me, I'm all for quick and easy rules.
When this box lands I'll be getting it and playing with my son and nephew often.

As far as not releasing a big rule book, if they just go ahead and keep releasing the rules, with errata, like they are doing right now, the barrier to entry for the game will have dropped greatly. This may be one of GWs best moves to bringing in new people to the hobby.

honestly they should have worded it differently. something about target audience and miniature collectors.

Honestly I never thought of them as anything else because frankly their games have always been a bit... haphazard. but with that said they also make the best looking models out there by far (IMHO). But Haskanael is right. there is a much better way for them to have worded that.
