Both variants have their place.

The only ones I use now are:
- Scout Sentinel w/Autocannon (and sometimes hunter-killer missile) squad of 2-3
Have them outflank and try for side/rear shots on vehicles.

- Armoured Sentinel w/multilaser or autocannon squad of 1.
Use this variant to tie up assault squads before they hit your tanks; unless the squad is packing power/chain fists, etc, you can tie up a squad 3 or 4 times more expensive than the Sentinel for the entire game. Sometimes you even win combats!

Scout Sentinels w/Missile Launchers are effective for outflanking/side/rear armor shots.
i don't often use them as i play Armored Battle Group rather than bog standard IG but when i have they are quite effective when used properly.
Autocannons also have their place on Scout Sentinels. Armored ones are not really worth the points, other units can do their job with much less risk to the unit.

My first game I used 3 Scout Sentinels (the Steel legion versions w/2 AC & 1 HF+HK) and they performed rather well. Killed a Predator on arrival and then knocked out a Rhino before tying up and eventually being destroyed by a unit of daemons. I've shaved off a few points and replaced the HF+HK model with a Missile Launcher for future games.

I've also got a pair of Drop Sentinels with Multi-lasers. These guys are going to be my Scouts if I only have the points for the economy model.

To me the ability to Outflank is worth it's weight in gold. And while I rather like bishop5's idea of using a basic Armored Sentinel as a speed bump I've yet to have an open FA slot available for that sort of unit.

I'd love to field a squadron of plasma cannons armed Armored Sentinels, but that's almost as expensive as a Executioner with Plasma sponsons. And AV14 with 5 S7/AP2 blasts beats AV12 with 3 every single day.

Yeah, I have 3 sentinals each filling up a different FA spot, (cause I dont have them filled up with anything else) all scouts with ML, AC and LC, and just outflank them where you need them and with an astropath thats never a problem.

Yep, Autocannon+HKM is very useful for cheap firepower.
