Default Tooling up Legion of the Damned

I'm currently working on a doomed chapter and, good rules or not, the Legion of the Damned sound damn spiffy for fluff and fun. But I was wondering on how to equip a small squad for, say, 1000-1500 points games.

My current idea is for 4 with bolters and a sargent with a power weapon and bolt pistol to keep costs low, but I think a meltagun would be really useful if they deepstriked awkwardly behind enemy lines. But, I'm also a newbie to games, so, any advice would be appriciated.

if you plan on using these guys always equip them with heavy weapons because they have the slow and purposeful rule they can move and shoot these on the same turn. there are pros and cons with this troop.

pros
5 man squad can equip heavy weapons
can move and shoot heavy weapons
they can deep strike
their armor save is invulnerable
decent number of attacks for points

cons
expensive
slow and purposeful makes assaulting difficult
deep strike may not land them when you want them.

overall they are a good unit if you always find yourself coming across a lot of troops with ap3 weapons, like thousand sun troops. assaulting makes them difficult. When it comes down to it it all depends on what you want them for. if you have enough elite spots open you can deep strike a decent amount of heavy weapons. personally I like having drop podded sternguard because their ammo makes them useful for a lot of situations.

Ahhh I see, interesting. What sort of heavy weapons would be best? I heard a meltagun was a good option.

if you want heavy weapon go multi-melta... but depends on what you want the squad to do? take out vehicles/MC's
or infantry

If a Million Guardsmen die, that's a statistic. If one marine dies, that's a tragedy.
Napolean Bonaparte

Never interrupt your enemy when he's making a mistake.

so why is it technically cheating when you know someone else's codex better than them and don't remind them of special rules they arn't using.

A good combo is Multimelta and Plasma gun- both 24", so you do not have a dilemma with target selection. but any walking heavy is cool. Flamer with Heavy Flamer is also good' although s&p will make it harder to max them out. s&p will make it harder to position against rear Armour with a lascannon. you can't go wrong with a plasma cannon.
