unapreciated tyranid units

RIPPERS EAT FACE!!! If there are any tyranid players out there I must advise that if you have a ripper squad field them. I played my friend who played space marines and my ripper squad of only 3 bases ended up cutting through 2.5, 5-man tactical squads and the better part of a 10-man assault squad with a Chaplin. those little buggers earned back their points 6 times over that game. do not underestimate these critters or they will eat your face!

On another note, a ranged carnifex is not all that great, they naturally shoot like and ork and with enhansed sences their aim can be improved to that of a guardsman. that is why I say that if you need to kill a lot of units really fast, I would go with a hive tyrant with enhanced senses, poison sacs, twin-linked death spitters, and a barbed strangler, it's cheaper point wise, the weapons are still just as leathal (tyranid weaponms have a strength limit after all) and it will be as accurate as a space marine, and it still has 4 wounds, and it can never be a victim of instant death which is something the sniperfex cannot boast.

ONE DAY I WILL STOP THEM...one day! but yeah i made the mistake of ignoring the rippers in favor of some gaunts when i got tied up in CC...yeah big mistake since the rippers ended up doing the brunt of the damage, his shooting tryant is blasty doom

My Chaotic Brother, may I suggest taking a Havoc squad with 4 flamers to deal with the over-sized cockroaches? They DO take more wounds from templates...

And as for rippers- I field 8 bases of them in my Genestealer swarm for that EXACT reason- people tend to forget about the little guys, and if you give them the Toxin Sac upgrade (+1S) they become TRULY nasty. To REALLY annoy the enemy I also give them "Leaping"- nothing says "Bite your face off" like a 12" charge...

Playing black templar, I love seeing rippers. My tyranid opponent croaked with unbridled joy as he sent the little bastards into a melee with my crusader squad led by the champion. He intended on tar pitting them for a good two to three turns.

It took me exactly one assault phase with 3 instant deaths(s6 power weapon and s8 powerfist) to slash through the obnoxious buggers.

well if he was smart and kept them in synapsis they would have been immune to the instant death rule.

True, but me causing nine wounds to the swarm in either case didn't help their staying power.

Also, since they count as mindless, don't they lose the benefit of no auto-death?

nope they keep it.
The reason fex's are given shooty devoures is becasue they are stronger natuarlly and are cheaper and a noramal dakka fex comes to 113 points meaning if you were nutty enough you could bring 6 in one army as long as it was 1500+.
Rippers are a pain and in my opinion should always be given leaping.

Actually, Rippers are quite specifically EXCLUDED from the "no Instant Death" rule.

Right in the Synapse section, page 28.

"Note that this does NOT apply to Ripper Swarms"

"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

I think anything fast in a tyranid force is under estimated...

As a somewhat static guard player...you don't have to kill a squad to make your points back...but if you charge in and i can't shoot..my squad is not killing anything.
