Now, it is bad form to play wothout a codex and force the opponant to either quit or take your word for it, but it's even worse to take advantage of someone who may not even be trying to pull anything by doing anything like the above.

Seriously, who's worse in this scenario?
"Sorry, I forgot my codex, but I've got everything written down. I hope you don't mind."
"Well, ok, but your terminators have a 5+ save."
"No they don't!"
"Hey, get your codex and prove me wrong."

To that I say WTF?!

People forget things. And yes, sometimes people outright cheat and then'forget' to bring the book that can refute them. That's why having a spare codex is a good idea. But to turn the tables and sink tot hat kind of level is just as bad or worse.

I'd rather someone just refuse to play with me than to try and pull any of that BS just because I left my 'dex on the table by the door.

Back to the subject: Collecitng codecies is never a bad idea. If nothing else, it falls under "Known thy enemy" By knowint their rules you'll know how to deal with them. After borrowing my brother's CSM codex, I was able to systematiclaly dismantle his khorneites with a couple of speeders. Studying never hurts, you may end up knowing things your enemy doesn't.

But if you;re on a budget, invest in Wargear. Like I said, it;s not a perfect reference anymore, but it gives you a good idea of what your enemy is packing.

for the record i've only ever pulled that shit on kids when i worked at GW, cuase i was sick of non of them ever buying rules books or codex's.

But outside playing mates unless they can show me it in black and white, and english (sorry too often have i been shown "some rule in my dex" but oh look its all in spanish/italian/german or what ever) then tough shit, borrow one from someone nearby or else suck it up.

You don't need to have all the codices to know their contents. I have near-total knowledge of all every codex bar Eldar, and that I know well enough to spot anything odd. I just read each codex that comes my way.

True, but it helps to have a copy you can point to when you call bullshit on someone

The point is that once you call bullshit, it is no longer your responsibility to prove anything, unless you refer to the rulebook or something. Any place where nobody has or has access to their own codex is not the sort of place worth playing in.
