Rules at my old game group: No codex, no play. If you can't show where it says you can do something, you can't. I still have yet to find a problem with this rule. And then, for larger gaming groups, you could probably group-fund all the codices, then you'll have them all avbailable for rules purposes, and borrowing.

Most of the time, you should be able to tell when someone's pulling shenanigans with the rules, since it doesn't make sense or seems too powerful.

I have practically every codex (except Dark Eldar+Orks) and can remember the rules by heart, if someone cheats I know about it, heck I know more than most staff members lol.

Same with me. I don't sit and study the things, I just have a photographic memory. I'd much rather have fun and not worry about it, so if someone makes a genuine mistake, I don't usually call them out on it. If they're outright cheating me, on the other hand... that's a different issue. That doesn't really happen except in tournament settings where you don't know your opponent in a non-gaming context, though, so it's not something to really worry about. I mean, the most common form of cheating is overloading a model with wargear. I see more daemon princes with 110 points of daemonic gifts than you can shake a stick at, and I do mention that they're over, but it's not really a big deal in friendly games as long as they make it legal for the next time.

Knowing your foe is part of being a good player though, and if nothing else, the codexes are good reads for fluff and modelling ideas. I make sure to have my library up to date as much as possible with all of the published codexes and miscellanious books such as Insignium Astartes. I'm a fluff addict, what can I say?

You wouldn't call out a mistake? That's bad, especially for newer playerss and genuine mistakes. If you don't tell them that it's not actually the rules, they won't know, and could as easily get into trouble later for not knowing the rules. If someone playing against me makes what I'd call a fair mistake, that is, a one-off, an easy misinterpretation, or a errant rule they apply to both sides, then I'll just tell them that it's wrong, and back it up with the main rules. If, though, they persist in doing it, or are using different rules that quite clearly convey an advantage to them only, I'll point it out much more visibly, and be prepeared for an argument.

I'm referring more to overzealous measuring, forgetting to move something in the movement phase and realizing that the game depends on that unit having moved when they're going around doing their shooting phase... things along those lines.

We have guys who know certain armies specifically. I had IG,SM and Tyranids under wraps. ANOther guy had orcs, couple had eldar. If you thought someone was BSing ya, you would just ask the other guy to get confirmation on something.

i have the necron tyranids tau and chaos codexs all are good reads

i have read a few codexs and memorize things i might find important

if you have all the codexs then that gives you some strategic advantages such as knowing wat each unit is used for such as some dark eldar units that just about know one collects and u just always assume they r telling the truth cause only pros or good people play em cause they look gay and suck

the more you run over a cat the flatter it gets

you could always buy a copy of Wargear. No p[oints, and doesn;t cover some pf the special rules (and with new eldar and tau codexes, it;s a little out of date) but it's stil a good reference for statlines weapons and wargear.
