I forgot dreads, I was thinking of the LRC, but in any case I was mainly just going for the joke.

you;re right though. THey;re good but not gamebusters. If you;re smart and prepared you can deal with them well enough.

ACs really shine in cityfight though, where their range isn't much of a liability. Though the plentiful cover takes a bit of wind out of their anti-infantry sails

still, you can force a lot of saves with a pair of speeders or a Baal or two. I know a trip pf speeders and a pair of Baals really helped me out in my last cityfight

Plus, of course, the pun potential goes through the roof when you add a second Baal ;-)

Consider this though. Assault cannon takes the guess work out of anti-infantry vs. anti-tank right? How about the Railgun on the Hammer Head, submunitions anyone? How about the Prisim Cannon on a Fire Prism, dispersed shot? Seems like a theme to me. Now, you can have many more assault cannons than Railguns or Prism Cannons, but then again Assault Cannons don't fire pie-plates either.

As an edit- Ork warbikes are hardly cheesy and grots being beardy is laughable. Effective, yes, but until grot blasters have rending I'll hardly call them cheese. The real ork cheese? Madboyz. Str 5, BS 3, 7 points...

Dreadnought's front and side armour shines versus Eldar and Dark Eldar where those nasty Lance weapons get no bonus, ho ho. Just thought I'd mention that because it never fails to amuse me.

shhh don't mention that orb. My opps still use pred's and crusaders .

The railgun and prism cannon are very different in that they come in single force org slot and are expensive[comparitively].

there were a few armies i saw at the gt that had

3 dreds assault cannon, 3 pred annihalator, 3 landspeeder tornado+ other stuff
3 pred, 6 landspeeder+ other stuff
and there were quite a few 3/4/6 speeder, 3 baal pred ba lists.

Anyway the AC is superior to almost every weapon out there and they can be used alongside other big stuff like vindicators preds etc. whilst taking a railhead stops you taking an ion head for example.

I thought the idea of giving 6s to hit AP 1. This keeps them as brutal anti-infantry weapons while still giving them the possibility to be marginally better against vehicles with some lucky rolling. To make them divine guidance - rolls to wound of 6 are AP 1- removes a loooot of the oomph against MEQs.

There are differences of course, but I constantly see three railhead Tau armies and three fireprism Eldar armies for the same reason you see those types of marine armies. The point I was trying to make is that it seems like each army (save the nids) is getting a gun that works equally well against infantry and vehicles. The ability to take so many AC's I imagine is because they don't toss pie plates around. I'm not saying AC's are wholly balanced, and would agree that they are the best shooting weapon in the game for their points cost, but they aren't so far fetched that no one has an answer for them.

Like the people here who have tken the time to calm down and think, I agree that while the Assault Cannon is very, very good, it isn't as good as the non-marine players think it is.

I've never really had issues dealing with an army that has some Assault Cannons. There have been some extreme army builds that makes the Assault Cannon get silly. The two extremes I've seen that were brutal to play against:

Lysanderwing 2000 points- 14 Assault Cannons

Vanilla Marines 2000 points- 12 Assault Cannons, 12 Missile Launchers

Taken to this extreme, it can get a bit taxing to play against.
