Default Do you have to use a special weapon in close combat if equipped with it?

Hey, just wondering if a model equipped with a special close combat weapon has to use it. For instance, my painboy has a poisoned weapon that always wounds on a 4+ but when he charges he's at str 5, so it's almost always better to use his regular strength. Do I have to use the poisoned weapon? Similarly sometimes I want my powerklaw-equipped nobs to strike in regular initiative order without the bonuses or penalties from the powerklaw as if they had no CC weapon at all. Does that work?

I don't know 100% about the Klaw, but I "think" you could strike with no Strength bonus or AP2. However if you have a poison that always wounds on a 4+ you still wound normal, and still re-roll the misses if your equal or above there Toughness.

EG-S5 Poison striking T3, you still wound on a 2+ and you re-roll all 1s because of the Poison.

You have to use the special close combat weapons you have, you can't turn them off.

However I don't think poison has to always wound on a 4+, it can have better chances against lower toughness.

Two seperate points:
1. If you have a special weapon, you must use a special weapon. You only get a choice if you have more than one special weapon, and then only between which special weapon to use.
2. Poisoned weapons have more benefits than just a fixed to wound roll now. See page 42 of the rulebook for more details.

Yup P42 is quite clear... you ALWAYS wound on a fixed dice but if you would normally wound on a 4+ or better you get a bonus
So painboys only ever wound on 4+ even is S5 vs T3 or 4...

However if your S is equal to or higher than the opponents toughness then you may re-roll to wound dice. Effectively, this means it is better against T4, but worse against anything less than that.

Thanks, I figured I had to use them but was hoping for a crack somewhere. Forgot about the poisoned weapons thing, still working out all the implications of the 5e changes.

Corollary: can a painboy harm vehicles? He's got a strength of 5 on the charge and 4 otherwise, so he would be able to damage many vehicles in close combat, but poisoned weapons says they "confer no advantage against vehicles". Does this mean I have to use the poisoned weapon on the vehicle even though it can't effect it?

the no advantage thing is because some poisonous weapons hurt vexs with special rules
eg- toxin sporre mines auto glance opent topped vehicles

Your painboy has none of that so will use his S4-5 as normal
