I'm not skilled with W40K yet but IMO yes you've been cheesed hardcore.

Unless the building was something like this:

and it was most likely something like this (as you describe it):

I don't see how a land raider can go through a building.

wat a n00b to think he could drive through a building, and then climb the stairs

Why hasn't anyone mentioned ramming?

You can ram buildings, and if they're destroyed, and the rhino is not destroyed back, then yes you can move right through buildings.

Might not wreck the vehicle, but it'll take long enough to clear it that it won't take any useful part in the fighting from there on out.)
Easy way to represent that is to just allow tanks to Ram buildings (technically ramming is only allowed against vehicles, but nobody would argue allowing it for vehicles too).

If the ram attack destroys the building then it becomes an Area Terrain ruin and the tank makes a DT check as he rolls into the wreckage.

The Big Rule Book only describes ramming enemy Vehicles and doesn't cover any other ramming situations. Sadly because I wish tanks with the spiky dozer blades could ram and run over infantry. Of course you could always house rule it before hand, assign values to the buildings and ram away, this is always good for City of Death fights.

I wouldn't have a problem fluff wise but he'd have to take hits back from the building.

Tanks can ram through buildings but its not encouraged as it tends to tear off all communications and targetting equipment. Making it useless.

Did he take terrain roles for entering, passing through and leaving?

Seriously man you got screwed royally. It's players like that guy that make me play at home and not in a shop.
