Default did we do this right? BT's Emporer's Champion

hey guys we just played a game on the weekend with my BT against my friends nids army. and the Emporer's champion killed both a hive tyrant and a tervagon (awesome i know )

we re-read the rules over and over and still came to the conclusion it was right. so i'll just put it up here for comment just using the hive tyrant example as that was the more challenging contest.

i assaulted the hive tyrant declared a challenge, tyrant accepted it (i mean why not, big beefy bad creature like that, and my friend wanted revenge for the tervagon). anyway he had his 7 hits at my EC (warpspeed and smite) i copped one wound out of it, then hit back using the sword for the ability to give instant death. Now with the BT chapter tactics my EC gains rending which on a six is an unsaved wound and sword says if it wounds the model it inflicts instant death so the hive tyrant dies. needless to say the hive guard went nuts and destroyed the EC and what was left of his unit.

that's pretty much what happened, anyway it was good to see that the EC got the beefing up that it needed.

PS i don't have my codex available for exact wording but that is it summized.

thoughts??

You did it correctly. Both Special Rules are triggered by a roll of "6" to Wound.

Rending causes an automatic Wound resolved at AP2 on a wound roll of 6, and Slay The Heretic grants the Instant Death USR on a wound roll of 6. Instant Death kills the model if it suffers an unsaved wound.

So assuming the model did not have 1+ armor or it did not make an invulnerable save it would die.

That combination of rules makes the EC pretty deadly in a challenge.

Throw him in an Honor Guard with the +1A Banner. Best way to run him. My last ever game with BT I ran him in a footslog Crusader squad and he chopped 3 wounds off a Nurgle Prince before going down.
