Default Flying Valkyrie Guard

Hey everyone. Wow, I haven't posted in a while...

I got the new rulebook a few days ago (I was on holidays when it was released), and have now read it cover to cover. However, one thing that stuck out for me was the fact that Valkyries, because they are fliers now, must begin in reserves. One of my IG armies relies heavily on Valks to get its troops where they need to be, so I was just wondering if that army is still possible with the new rules.

If I remember correctly, in the last edition you had to start the battle with an HQ and two Troops on the field no matter what you had in reserves. I looked high and low through the new book, but could find no mention of this rule. Did I just miss it? If so, my Valkyrie-bound Vostroyans will be very sad since they will no longer be able to begin the game in their transports (there are only three squads of them, and three Valkyries).

In short, I guess my question is whether or not I can start a battle with no Troop choices on the field (there are plenty of Heavy Support and HQ units though) if they will be arriving with their Valks from reserves.

You can half of your army in reserve, there is no restrictions of what kind of units are on the board and what is in reserve. I do not remember a requirement like this in 5th ed either.

On page 124 under Reserves, it states half your units rounded up must begin the game on the table. Units that must deploy from reserve are ignored for the purposes of determining how many units may remain in reserves. So every one of your flyers as well as any other reserves-only units may start in reserves, and up to half of what's left may be embarked on those flyers or otherwise kept in reserves.

Ninja'd by scscofield. I believe he's thinking of the old Dawn of War deployment scenario.

This set of rules has me wondering about my pure DP list, is that not possible anymore?

Can you not just deploy it in hover mode?

Deep striking all of them? No, unless there's a special rule stating a DW army must arrive by deep strike.

Don't DPs have to start in reserve, and they are all transports..... I am sorry this is off topic OP.

So a pure DP army could start in reserve then..... See my confusion here.

However, the parent unit does not have to deploy in a Drop Pod, and is counted when calculating how many units may deploy from Reserves. Pure Drop Pod armies are no longer possible. I'll be editing the FAQ/Errata candidates concerning this.
