Pretty much all Chapters have a mix of suits, and Mk3s are actually still prized for their reinforced frontal armour (and brutal appearance). The Raven Guard are slightly worse equipped than you'd expect for a First Founding, being mostly equiped with Mk6 rather than Mk7 armour. No reason they wouldn't have a higher number of older suits (though Mk3s are for brutal, frontal assault - not their forte).

The Marines Malevolent are using older equipment, both armour and bolters, according to the Salamanders books. The Red Scorpions have a real mix of armour types, as the Forge World Chapter, and there's no reason for an invented Chapter to not be poorly equipped.

More fleet-based Chapters will be better at boarding actions - the best examples I can think of are the Minotaurs and the Astral Claws/Red Corsairs.

I don't really like the Minotaur scheme, would also be hard to paint for me as well heh. I think Harbinger's have the right amount of fluff that lets me do stuff with them, as well as the fact their home planet is "Birmingham" which is where I actually live lol. There Chapter Master has a bad ass name to I think.

As a note, the Red Scorpions are almost exclusively equipped with the MkIV, so it's perfectly within the rights to make yourself a chapter designed as such.

And for a Fleet Based/Crusading Chapter is likely to be forced to use mothballed stacks if they're away from the Chapter Monastery, or even so, be fully equipped with them.

The Marines Errant are a fleet based chapter, and their 3rd Company has a Captain who can take a unit with Scout and Move Through Cover, and "Void" Armour which grants a 5+ Invuln, stopping them running - pretty much guaranteed to be Mk3, as they're "Veterans".

On the other hand, the Howling Griffons are noted as having large numbers of the MkVIII Eagle Armour.

Would chapters use a combination of Mks? Like for example instead of my whole force having MKIII they'd have normal armour but with the MKIII helmets? or Having the MKIII armour but normal helmets?

Everything's bitch and botch. They're for the most part interchangeable. For example, my chapter is MkIV with MkVIII Power Packs, some of the Crusader Black Templar Helmets, MkIV Helmets, and some even using the Chaos Warriors helmets with the horns cut off.

like Vaz has said, there are many chapters, almost all of them, that still hold on to some relic pieces of armour as homage to their past. For example, a captain dies in the field of battle, and his successor assumes his left pauldron. this could go on for many centuries. This process can also be applied to other parts of the armour.

However, your thoughts of a completely old mark chapter, is a little harder to justify.

What if they were on bad terms with the mechs, they blame the chapter for losing a forge world or something important.

Or just have poor supply for one reason or another; the Marines Malevolent are forced to use older marks of armour (and bolters) because they haven't been issued with new stuff and they apparently can't make their own.

To reiterate the best answers in the thread IMHO:

Red Scorpions - large amounts of Mk.IV
Fleet-Based chapter - boarding squads are Mk.III or 'mongrel' mixed-piece suits. Examples of this can be found in Imperial Armour 9, such as the Fire Hawks.

Weren't the Harbingers the homebrew chapter of Pete Haines? That'd put me right off.

lol oh well, I've totally changed my mind and going for a World Eaters army with lots of flash forge world models like the dreadnaught and the blood slaughterer and the daemon prince model for my greater daemon :D
