i thought that myself, any sources i can look at?

Fire Hawks they are.
Its all a bit hazy now but its probably worth checking out the background for Sergeant Centurius in WD 195.

He was a special Character that was released for the celebrations of GWs 100th store opening on March 2/3 1996 and was sculpted by Jes Goodwin.

I know that the hint has been put in print somewhere and thats my best guess for now.

Heres what Lexicanum have to say which is pretty conclusive.

Lex cites them as being them as being part of the cursed founding and from the smurfs.

Entirely possible. The LotD actually appears in the novel The Chapter`s Due written by Graham McNeill. Though it never actually says that they are the LotD you`d have to be pretty not to see it in black and white.

They appear from the flames, kick ass, then return to the flames.

One of them however, leans in and tells Captain Ventris some great secret before he disappears. Uriel recognises him as some long lost captain from history, suggesting that the LotD is comprised of space marine spirits, whether they be Fire Hawks or not.

It makes sense in a way. After all we have psychic manifestations in other imperial sources, Celestine and the Sanguinor for instance.
