Most recruits come from feral worlds and hive gangs. So by the time they're 13 they've got more combat experience than most adults do.

There's 'combat' and combat though. Most recruits will have experience fighting and killing people but very few will have any actual military training. It's certainly a better starting point (though I'd argue more for psychological factors than actual training) but that doesn't mean there's not a long way to go.

No it's not the same thing, but given who the space marines are and what they go through to become a space marine, anyone who has the will to survive and a killers instinct is going to be their first pick.

Oh I agree. I was just clarifying as to why there was still a pretty lengthy training period before they became Marines.
