Default Barbarus and the Slaugth

I stumbled across the information on Lexicanum about the Slaugth http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Slaugth#.U-iB60jMCGd

This instantly reminded me of the description of the enemies on Barbarus which Mortarion and the other humans fought against prior to the coming of the Emperor.

They are impervious to poison which would enable them to survive in the poisonous heights on Barbarus.
They are filled with a monstrous hunger for the dead which matches the description of the overlords on Barbarus. They can grow entire armies of constructs - just like the overlords.

I've read that it's thought the overlords were Dark Eldar but I think the Slaugth fit the description much better.

It's an interesting theory. It's been long enough since I read about the battle I can't remember the details.

Barbarus and the Hazeroth Abyss are on opposite sides of the Imperium though, so it does seem like a long way.

Thanks, I've not looked seen the Hazeroth Abyss on the map so I'll have to have a look.

Well, they are listed as an ancient species. The space marine legions of old might have commited enough xenocide on them to cause them to flee and hide across the galaxy.

Though the overlords of Barbarus always felt to me like a group of humans that had become -deeply- tainted by Nurgle during Old Night.

Here are a few quotes from Betrayal:

Quote:
The world... was the very epitome of the terrors which had befallen Man during the long night of the Age of Strife - a domain of savage, alien overlords who ruled over an entrapped and preyed upon human population.
Quote:
Barbarus' planetary ecology was... so strange and singular as to be likely engineered by its masters both to sustain them and serve as a means of control in its own right.
Quote:
The true name of Barbarus' xenos masters has been stricken from the record... Giants they were, thrice the height of a man and debecked in rusted armour... whose sciences and necromantic lore had long ago conquered death save by great violence, and who filled their eternities with intrigues and conflict among their own kind played out with unimaginable inventive malignity.
It goes on to consistently refer to them as "aliens" and "xenos" (and other similar things) so I think it is reasonable to conclude that they were a race of Nurgle-corrupted aliens who came to Barbarus during the Age of Strife and dominated the human colonists present there. Based on the evidence we have, I would suggest they were a separate race/species/civilisation to the Slaugth.

Yeah, they might have been Nurgle but I'm sure they're not human as per COTE's quote from Betrayal below.

I see what you mean, I thought the height might indicate support the Slaugth - Barbarus xenos theory but the Slaugth are only 3 metres tall and thus not 3 times the height of a man.

Ahh well, another hopeful theory dashed

3 meters tall? I highly doubt that is the average height of the dark eldar.

Excellent point, that also removes the Dark Eldar possibilities. Ahh well, I suppose we'll never know.
