Default Proactive role of the Emperor

What if the Emperor didnt need to be shackled to his throne and let his mind and power be consumed with the task of holding the forces of chaos at bay, how different would the outcome and the battle for Terra be if the Emperor physically led and planned parts of the planets defences?would some traitor primarchs die?what would Horus do?how would his brothers react?

I don't think it would have been that much different. The traitor hordes were too numerous and too powerful for even the Emperor to have turned the tide.

Especially considering he had lost his prescience and his psychic power would have been challenged (perhaps even contained) by Horus, Magnus and the daemonic hordes.

Maybe the Emperor could have stood with Sangy at Eternity Gate? Then Sangy may have been in better shape against Horus...

But too many what ifs. Too many factors that could have changed.

If the Emperor who could blast the very essence of Horus from the Universe showed up and hunted down some of the traitor primarchs, then I think the Assault of Terra would have been concluded in a far more satisfactory way for the Imperium.

If the Emperor who got his head stepped on by an Ork and required his chosen son to rescue him showed up, I agree there wouldn't have been much difference.

The White Zone is for loading and unloading only. If you have to load, or if you have to unload, go to the White Zone. You'll love it... it's a way of life.

Nick Naylor: Cigarettes in space?
Jeff Megall: It's the final frontier, Nick.
Nick Naylor: But wouldn't they blow up in an all oxygen environment?
Jeff Megall: Probably. But it's an easy fix. One line of dialogue. 'Thank God we invented the... you know, whatever device.'

Last time I checked it's wasn't a standard ork who did that. And wasn't it also a waaagh that made ghazkull's seem small?

Point taken, but if the Emperor has a hard time with even the strongest of orks warbosses, and you have traitor primarchs taking out Avatar's of Khaine or those selfsame warbosses, then it makes the point that the Emperor wouldn't be making a whole lot of difference during the Siege.

Well horus was only capable of harming the emperor when pumped full of chaos. He had the emperor the only reason why he didn't win is because ollainus bought the emperor a few seconds to strike back.

There's no reasons to think a war boss with the full power of the waaagh behind him would not be able to do the same.

Couple that with the fact he probably though horus wasn't a threat makes it reasonable to say it's possible.

The text in the Index Astartes (I believe that's where I've read it, correct me if I'm wrong) is pretty specific that Horus cut the arm off as it "attempted" to strangle the Emperor. That's vague enough that we do not know how successful the Ork was in its attempt.

I could attempt to strangle the Emperor after all, and that wouldn't get me very far, would it?

I personally think the word choice was pretty deliberate, but your own mileage may vary.

This is true. For all we know it was the Emperor's mid battle nap time, and Horus just didn't want his father to be woken up early and grumpy for the rest of the day.

Guiding the Astronomican from across the galaxy is tiring work. A couple of regularly timed power naps throughout the day kept him not only psychically able, but also helped him retain his youthful appearance.

The disparate reports of the Emperor's apparent age was, in fact, due to the Emperor's power napping. Some days he had to skip and, boy, did he suffer for it.
