Default Is the Emperor of Mankind a god?

It's a simple yes, no or other-question. He doesn't have monopoly on worship so he can't be God. But is the Emperor of Mankind a god or not?

A god in the terms presented in 40k? No. He's not a warp being, he isn't the manifestation or reflection of emotional energy, he's just a very powerful psyker in a blinged out chair.

"Look into my eyes, and see your death."
"Let them hate, so long as they fear."

As of right now, no. If his body dies and he somehow becomes more powerful then yes.

Well, if you guys read the earlier fluff on the emperor it's not quite so clear. The original fluff was that he was the reincarnation of thousands of earth's shamans and priests who all committed suicide at the same time to join their essences in the warp and be reborn as one person.

That's what was in rogue trader or the lost and the damned anyway. If you also check out the sensei and illuminati backgrounds, they make a case for the emperor's divinity.

That once his body does and his spirit is no longer targeted to the golden throne that he would either be reborn, our carry on as a warp deity of humanity.

I put "Other, just explain in the post".

Quite simply because you haven't defined what you mean by the term 'god' and therefore this poll is just going to be an expression of opinion.

In the 40k mythos, 'god' generally refers to, as MEQ said, a warp being which is a manifestation or reflection of emotional energy or the warp representation of a race's collective psyche. That definition covers the Chaos Gods, the Eldar Gods, and the Ork Gods. The Emperor obviously does not fit into that category though.

Does that mean he's not a god? No. After all, he's worshipped by trillions of mortals from one end of the galaxy to the other. We know for a fact that he himself rejected notions that he was divine and conquered the galaxy under a secular banner. He never (even whilst giving his final orders on the Golden Throne as you thought) did a U-turn on that policy, he always rejected his divinity as well as religion in general.

In seems, from an objective standpoint, that he isn't a god. But of course, if you had defined the term, you might have got a better response.

I kept the definition loose on purpose as different people have different interpretations of what pertains to be a god.

If his body dies and his spirit entered the warp, how long would it survive against the chaos gods? I guess it would need some sort of ritual to keep it from the warp and instead make it take possession of a new body? Ain't Gullimars kept in a stasis field and that he is believed to be alive?

Emperor possessing you. That can't be good.

And now I'm accidentally seeing Empy possessing Abbadon. That would be interesting to read.
