A really good sharp hobby knife is the best way to get a smooth finish (and dissected finger tip if you're not careful). File or sand paper can leave a textured finish. Clip it off as close as possible to the body of the weapon, then shave down where the join was.
I know good quality hobby tools can be damn expensive if you buy from the likes of GW, but very good alternatives are available at a hardware store for a fraction of the price. They are well worth the investment, and will last you years.
