Default Tips For Minor Mods With Plastic?

Hi guys, I'm planning on taking the blades (bayonett?) off my Necron Warriors Gauss Flayers.

It's mostly an aesthetic thing (plus to me having a blade on a gun doesn't seem very futuristic)

What I'd like to know is, what's the best way to go about getting a smooth finish to make it seemless as if the thing was never there? I want to get rid of the blade and the circular part smoothed down so that's gone too.

Am I better using a file or sandpaper? I've seen people mention both for bigger stuff but this is so small that I'm not sure which is best or if theres a better way.

Thanks
