Well at least your government had a "buy back" policy. Ours just declares the previously legal firearms "illegal" and if you didn't have the right to own a "prohibited" firearm before you can't keep yours now and you must surrender it to the government for destruction. Even if it cost you 3-5 thousands dollars and you bought it completely legally through a licensed dealer.
