Default Pan's Labyrinth. Your thoughts?

I went and saw this foreign film(Spanish, subtitled in English) last week, hoping to see a certain thing. Well, it was a bit confusing and about nothing I originally hoped for. Yet, it was still a decent movie, with odd twists and turns and a BRUTAL spanish captain that makes some Saw scenes look like Sesame Street.

It was another of those movies that left you wondering, was it all real or the character's imagination? I don't want to say much more as to not spoil the plot for some, but it's one of the creepiest movies I've seen in awhile. Especially the part with the child-eating monster who inspired a sort of terror not present in 99% of american-made films. The paintings on his walls were legendary. Very good directing, brutal and efficient plot and scenes, and cringing for days for some who can't stop thinking of the plier torture, the bottle beating, or the sickening gait of that fleshy monster...

A guy at work last night was raving about it. I haven't seen it yet but I certainly want to.

one thing I want is the ability to split my fire everywhere, it makes no sense that a squad of 10 guard or marines or whatever all have to fire at 1 target with everything, is the guy with the lascannon not smart enough to realize maybe he would be better off firing at the massive tank looming overhead instead of the little man no bigger than a squat running at him, or is that far too complex for the 10yr olds?

I loved it!

I liked how it was difficult to tell if Pan was good or bad. However, i wish it was more about Pan.

It seems the Captain/Family subplot supplanted the "Pan-plot."

For me, it's one of the best films I've seen in years. Even teh smallest details, like the look of the uniforms or how the mud looked out in the forest was great. I didn't need to suspend disbelief when looking at mundane objects, because they all appeared to be of a type and quality that was authentic. What CG was used was done very well and the plot was something you'd actually expect from a classic fairy tale. Despite its name, I think the girl was meant to be the primary charecter and thus both her sets of experiences were equally important. Too much of Pan would have pushed the film toward the fantastic, rather than keeping you focused on the girl. Just my two cents.

I've seen it... nothing close to what I expected, which in some ways was wonderfully refreshing! I would recommend it to anyone with a pre-disposition towards the fantastical... although despite being reasonably tolerant of most cinematic violence, the bottle beating was harsh!

Overall... a rating of 8.

The title in spanish is "El Labarinto del fauno", so the Pan bit was something that came about during translation...

I loved the film, the director's pretty well known in spain so the style wasn't so much of a surprise for me, but definately one of the better films of the last few years for me...

I should really break this one out and watch it. I've owned the video for months but for whatever reason it hasn't gone on. Think I'll do my best to watch it this weekend and let folks here know what I think.

This film is well worth a watch, it is horrific and beautiful at the same time.
