Possessed Chaos Space Marine Tactics

Possessed Chaos Space Marines are regarded as one of the overpriced and unpredictable elites and on paper you might think this is true (I know I did.)Compared to a berszerker you have 1 less attack, no bolt pistol and no furious charge(unless you get it on the charts.)

So why not save some points and get some berzerkers. Well for a start Possesed gain str 5 all the time not just on the charge, they have 5+ invun and a random ability either:

* Power weapons(MEQ killer)
* Scouts(use with transports for 12 inch possible first turn charge)
* Fleet(self-explantory)
* Furious Charge(Str 6 on charge could take out tanks possibly)
* Rending(Not as good against MEQS but more possibilities against tank)
* Feel No Pain(assault plague marines in a nut shell).

Random is good!

People also don't like possesed because of the random factor, especially since you choose this after deployment. Don't forget this also affects your opponent he doesn't know if you could get scout and get in a position to assault something first turn, or get Feel no pain and render his heavy bolters half as a effective which were to kill of assault based sqauds.

Equipment

The only options for wargear for possesed are Icons and a champion.

Icons are:

Chaos glory Basically used like a personal icon as are already fearless.

Slaanesh Extra int lets you attack first which always good for assault units less effective with Furious charge.

Khorne Extra attacks increases killing power by 50% when not charging.

Nurgle T5 makes extra tough with 5+ inv makes for a tough unit especially with FnP.

Tzeentch 4+ inv makes better against plasma guns and other usual MEQ killing stuff.

Also with icons the more models in the sqaud the more valuable the icon so if you do have a squad of ten always take a icon and I would recommend it even in a sqaud of 5.

Champion

Now getting the extra attack for the champion isn't a really big deal, I would get it mainly if you have a greater summoned daemon since unlike other champions its only ten points more and isn't extra expensive with power fists or plasma etc.

i like the break down and while personally i feel possessed are awesome, and frankly some of the coolest models in game. I think tbh they suffer from being the middle child from what i understand from the codex. As you said, if you just want an assault unit why not take some zerks instead, but if you want the awesome abilities then spend a little more for termies and have the abilities you want guaranteed. If you want tank hunters and have a spare elite squad, a 5 man chosen unit with meltas can infiltrate and do it more reliably for less points (i think). But it would be nice to see some more ppl use these brilliant models

Yea thats a good point i personally think that possesed look SOOOO much better then berzerkers although there probably really hard to paint (haven't painted mine yet) it would also be good if the possessed set came with an icon.
But anyway thx 4 da comment

Agreed that they are cool models. However, I think that the uncertainty is the problem. Most chaos guys are good when they are specialised and meant to kill one thing. You know pms will survive on the objectives, you know that a khorne lord will charge, you know that termies will deepstrike and kill tanks/ics, and you know what chosen are geared for.

The real problem with possessed is that they are elites and around them are Chosen (whom you can gear for pretty much anything) and termies (same) so why would you choose possessed over either of the first two elites? I really do agree that they are cool models, but look at their points cost. For 300ish points (10 guys and icon) you don't know what they are going to do. With 300 points that's around 6-7 kitted out termies.

I almost said that's about 10 chosen too, but you wouldn't even spend 300 for a good squad of chosen because they're so cheap, even with power ups.

I like this article, but I'd never use possessed in a tourney.

Don't forget that they don't have grenades either. Hitting at I1 is no fun.

Well to reply Fredrick u say that their not specialised well i see your point however if you did use Possessed they would always be trying to assault the daemonkin table just determines what aspect of close combat their best at wether it's making them tougher, faster or better in cc.

And to reply to Gul torgo yea unfortunately they don't have frag grenades but hell neither do terminators.

I think the problem is tho, tactics wise you want to know what your possessed would be geared to before the game pretty much starts. You can't pay the points for them knowing they are going to fill a hole in your army, because you don't know what they will be best at when buying them. I agree with Frederick as to be specialized you need to know what they will be doing, where as when you buy them now you have no idea.

They need to be specialized. In competitive games you need to know what you're buying and what they are used for.

That being said, in non-cmp games I'll use them because they are cool models and under-used. I think tho that unless you get them with power weapons u could just use them to kill troops. Now, they are going to kill troops, but at 26 points I'd rather use the cheaper cult marines who can kill troops just as well. The only way that you can justify their huge points sink (remember, only lords/tanks/termies/those crappy fast attack things that no one uses but we call chaos spawns cost more) is if you know what they give you. I like the fleet thing, the power weapons, and furious charge. However, the scouts, rending, and feel no pain aren't good enough to warrant their points cost.

Do the mathhammer and you'll see that feel no pain isn't worth it when you can have nurgle marines (are you really going to use that +1 str?), rending sucks, and scouts really adds nothing.

Altho...if I'm running two lash princes and 3 oblit squads I think I might just throw in these guys because I can throw them in and still win.

Frederick

Frederick
Umm i don't understand if i had feel no pain on possessed i thought it would just make them twice as durable and the str 5 means im wounding on 3s.Rending isn't something to be relied on in assault but against tanks it could be quite useful with str 5 and although scouts is quite a weak option if you have first turn with scouts and a transport you could get a first turn charge.

But otherwise i understand what your saying and i agree possessed aren't cut out for tourneys but with such great models and fluff i think it's a real shame their not on the board unlike obliterators who are really hard to paint and the lash combo which is a little unfair for freindley's

feel no pain actually makes them 50% more durable (only half [50%] of unsaved models, on average, die) but the point I'm trying to make is that the only difference between plague marines and possessed with feel no pain is that possessed with feel no pain have a 5+ save, and 5 strength (as opposed to the str 4 of pms). for 3 more points it's really not worth it.
Actually...now that I see it's only 3 points I think it is worth it. I take back what I said.

Now that I do the math I think possessed are worth their points on a few rolls. Maybe I might use them in a competitive game that's not a tourney, to see how they do. But I swear, if I roll rending I'm going to kill myself...26 points for RENDING!!!!
