Default Dark Angels

HOW TO PAINT DARK ANGELS SPACE MARINES

This is a guide to painting Dark Angels Space Marines. It uses simple three-stage layering, edge highlights, and washes to produce a quick and easy result that looks impressive on the table.

HOW TO PAINT DARK ANGELS SPACE MARINES- GENERAL PREP

1. Assemble your Dark Angel using Citadel Superglue.
2. Spray the model with black primer.

HOW TO PAINT DARK ANGELS SPACE MARINES- BASECOATS

1. Basecoat the armor with either Games Workshop Dark Angels Green or Reaper Peacock Green. This is a dark, strong green that will form the basis for the armor.

2. Basecoat the robes with either Games Workshop Bestial Brown or Reaper Ruddy Leather.

3. Basecoat all silver areas with Games Workshop Boltgun Metal.

4. Paint the coil on the plasma pistol white.

5. Basecoat all gold areas with a 50/50 mix of a dark brown, such as Games Workshop Scorched Brown or Reaper Ruddy Leather, and a bronze color, such as Games Workshop Dwarf Bronze or Reaper Ancient Brass.

6. Dot the eyes on the helmet with a dark red, such as Games Workshop Scab Red or Reaper Bloodstain Red.

We should now have a basecoated miniature.

HOW TO PAINT DARK ANGELS SPACE MARINES- THE ROBES
1. We’ll start with a layer of Reaper Aged Bone or Games Workshop Snakebite Leather with a bit of Bleached Bone mixed in. Just leave the deepest recesses showing.

2. Now, we’ll do a layer of Reaper Polished Bone or Games Workshop Bleached Bone. Leave some of the previous step showing towards the recesses, but otherwise, cover the robes.

3. Finally, we’re going to mix a bit of white into the Polished Bone or Bleached Bone, and do one final highlight layer.

4. Then, we’re going to cut some Devlan Mud with about 75% water and glaze the robes with that.

HOW TO PAINT DARK ANGELS SPACE MARINES- THE ARMOUR
1. Mix some Games Workshop Goblin Green or Reaper Viper Green into the original base color, and apply broad “thick” highlights to the hard edges of the armor.

2. Apply final edge highlights of pure Goblin Green or Viper Green.

3. As you can see, this is rather obnoxious looking, so we’re going to tone the highlights down by mixing up some Badab Black and Thraka Green, and applying a wash to the armor.

HOW TO PAINT DARK ANGELS SPACE MARINES- REMAINING DETAILS
1. Give all the silver areas a wash of Badab Black.

2. Give the gold areas a layer of either GW Shining Gold or Reaper Antique Gold.

3. Apply some blue ink if you’ve got any, or GW Asurmen Blue wash to the coil on the plasma pistol.

4. Apply a wash of either Ogryn Flesh or a 75/25 mix of Brown and Red ink to the gold areas.

5. Apply a highlight of GW Chainmail or Reaper True Silver to the metal areas.

6. Paint the belt with a dark red, such as Reaper Clotted Red or Games Workshop Red Gore.

7. Highlight the belt and dot the eyes with either Reaper Carnage Red or Games Workshop Blood Red.

8. Dot the eyes with white.

HOW TO PAINT DARK ANGELS SPACE MARINES- SQUAD AND CHAPTER MARKINGS
1. This particular model is going to be a Tactical Squad Sergeant, so he’ll get a red arrow on his right shoulder pad. We’ll block that out in GW Scab Red or Reaper Bloodstain Red.

2. Then, in grey, on the other shoulder, we’ll block out the Dark Angels Chapter icon.

3. We’ll then go over that in white.

4. We’ll highlight the tactical squad marking in either Blood Red or Reaper Carnage Red.

Now, we have a finished Dark Angel Space Marine. Go ahead and base your model however you see fit. You can take the time to add litanies and devotional markings in white anywhere on the armor.

nice job ^_^ but the only thing that bothers me is that the tactical arrow has two points <-> instead of just strait up they're old school like that

That's a really nice painting guide TSoH! I'm not so interested in the fact it's a Dark Angel but you've still done a brilliant job on the model and the tutorial. I'm more interested in the way you've painted the robes, I'm going to have to try out this approach next time I need to paint robes as it looks very nice.

very good tutorial..completely different to the way i imagine to paint the robes - i started off with white then dark wash to show the folds and shadows then touched up with white ..will give this one a try.
