Hey guys! I'm just starting to build an orcs and goblins army after moving on from WoC and was hoping to get your advice on the sorts of units to use in a competitive list. I mostly play against skaven and elves for which I've heard that OnG are probably not the best choice :S but anyway here's my list so far, any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated!!!
Lords
Savage orc great shaman - lv.4, lucky shrunken head - 255pts
Heros
Black orc big boss - bsb, dragon helm - 125pts
Night goblin shaman - lv.2, ds - 110pts
Core
49x Night goblins - netters, hw&s, fc - 272pts
38x Savage orc big 'un - ahw, fc - 453pts
Special
20x Black orcs - shields, fc - 295pts
3x Trolls - 105pts
Since you obviously are running the Savage Orc Shaman in the unit of Savage Orcs ('duh !), I'd probably beef him up with the Fencing Blades for WS 10, to protect him some more from incoming attacks.
I suspect the Black Orc BSB is joining the very same unit to Quell Animosity.
That leaves you with a lot of your eggs in one single basket ( > 700 pts.), way too much for my taste, but some people do well with deathstar units.
Quintessentially, you're sporting very very few units for a game of 2.000 pts.
At least where my meta would be concerned, but of course that can vary a lot due to whom and where you play.
49 Night Gobbos are going nowhere without the support of some goblin / night goblin characters.
Take two smaller units with short bows instead for more tactical flexibility.
3 Trolls .... yeah, might be okay as a flanking unit kept close to the BSB. I'd go for 6 eventually.
Ditch the unit champion on the Black Orcs and pick up the Standard of Discipline for +1 LD.
Nothing to comment on the 'Rares' selection, more or less what one would expect in most lists.
Netters are fun (and effective) in a Night Goblin unit tailored to serve as an anvil (I.E. 60+ gobbos with melee weapons and bucket full of cheap-ass characters beefing them up), but I wouldn't bother with them in a 20-25 model unit of archers. They'll die either way once they're in close combat.
Fanatics ... they can cause some serious damage / wreck havoc in case your opponent is unprepared for them or does not know how to counter them. Again, depends on your metagame. A Fanatic can be fun in a small unit of archers, but I probably wouldn't spare the points. If you feel like it and had success with them, then more power to you !
One shaman per archer unit. Or, ditch one of them and put the Scroll and the Ruby Ring on just one shaman.
Keep the musicians on the gobbo archers for swift reform and firing !!
And try to keep the Dragonhelm on the Black Orc. Black Orc hero & mundane shield & Dragonhelm is a pretty effective build.
